Description So, a friend of mine is going back to Germany after 7 months in Canada. She invited a bunch of people to a farewell dinner and I made these lovely maple cookies for the occasion.

I couldn't find any good sounding recipes online, so I kinda made up my own from a modified version of one of my favorite sugar cookie recipes. Here it is:

Ingredients:

1/2 cup butter, softened
2 eggs,
1 cup maple sugar (substitute with brown sugar if you can't find maple sugar)
1/2 cup dark maple syrup

3 cups flour
1/2 tsp baking powder

Cream first four ingredients together until smooth and fluffy.
Stir baking powder into flour, mix well, add to egg mixture and stir well. Once it gets too hard to stir, start kneading the dough.
You get best results if you refrigerate the dough for at least an hour before rolling it out. Simply roll it out and cut with cookie cutters, arrange cookies on parchment paper lined cookie sheets.

Bake at 400°F / 200°C for 6 to 10 minutes, depending on size and thickness of cookies. (bake until the edges start turning golden if you want soft cookies, bake until the edges turn slightly brown if you want harder cookies)

I decorated the cookies with marshmallow fondant in red and white... well, to be honest, the real cookies are actually a bit more pink than red, I adjusted the color of the photo. It's hard to get dark, bright colors with marshmallow fondant. I used a whole bottle of red food coloring!

Anyways, they taste lightly maplely and are nice and sweet. If you like your cookies less sweet, reduce the amount of sugar or leave the marshmallow fondant off, it's deathly sweet!

I'm glad you liked it.

Dough can turn out different depending on your temperature, humidity and even elevation of the area you live in... or maybe the ingredients were a bit off. Try adding a bit more flour and sugar to get it to a rollable dough or refrigerate it for an hour, it might help.

is right, when you want rich colors you want to go with the gel food colorings.

The cookies look delicious, I may have to try them, and I definitely have to try the marshmallow fondant. I can't say that I've heard of that before, but I know I want to try it.

Marshmallow fondant is deeeelicious, tastes just like marshmallows. A little sweeter of course, but way better than standard fondant.

Is marshmallow fondant something you make your self? I know regular forndant can be tricky to make on your own (I haven't had any luck!)

MyntKat In reply to The-Cute-Storm [2010-04-18 02:06:13 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I make it myself and it's really easy to make and tastes sooo much better than regular fondant. You just melt the marshmallows in the microwave, add some water (or flavoring, or color) and powdered sugar and knead for a few hours. It's better if you leave it in the fridge for a day and then let it warm up to room temperature before using it.

They sound delicious, and they look fabulous! I like the presentation here, too.
And hey, I pink, so even the actual color would be awesome in my opinion!
(Now wishing I would have thought of something like this last month when my friend went back to England after several months here in Canada!)

I seem to meet a lot of temporary people here, so I'm constantly trying to come up with canadian stuffs for fare-well parties. Unfortunately it also means that my friends keep leaving.

Marshmallow!? Yummo.
I imagine it to be very sticky and tasty when you make them
I take it you had a shape cutter thing? Either that or you must be seeing nothing but maple leaves after all those.

The fondant is a bit sticky before kneading it, but it's not too bad.
And yes, I had a shape cutter.

Adorable!

I have to use that Fondant recipe soon, I just got a bag of some delicious rabbit shaped mellows begging to be boiled alive.

Cute arrangement tooo.

The Wilton Gel food coloring works like magic for vibrant colors. The liquid form just dilutes too fast.

MyntKat In reply to Cherieosaurus [2010-03-26 22:52:07 +0000 UTC]

I never tried the gel one, they seem so expensive compared to the liquid... but maybe they are worth it. They probably don't water the fondant down as much, either. I always have to add an extra amount of sugar when I add so much color and it gets way too sweet. The white marshie fondant tastes much better.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cherieosaurus In reply to MyntKat [2010-03-26 23:20:34 +0000 UTC]

In the end, they are worth it. They are small containers, but the color is so concentrated I use a toothpick tip to gradually get the the color, you dip 75% of the Toothpick into it and you get insane color. The best part is, it doesn't change the flavor or consistency of the icing. I could always taste the iron/metallic taste that over food colored icings tend to get. Even some of the Grocery store pre-colored Icings I can't eat because of that taste. Also, I've had the gel for at least 3-4 years and I still have PLENTY to last me another 3-4. I use them at most 5 times a year.

MyntKat In reply to Cherieosaurus [2010-03-26 23:56:48 +0000 UTC]

Sounds like they are worth it... fondant always takes up so much color because of all the marshmallows. So I guess next time I'll try the Wiltons, thanks.
