Eh.. I don't think Kaidan "sucks." I rather like him. I just think he's prone to being very stubborn and somewhat of an ass. (during ME2.)

I realize I am speaking only for myself, and that there are a lot of Kaidan fans out there, and I wish them all nothing but the best.
It's just that to me, Kaidan, was boring as a ship-mate, and as a squad-mate...well, anything he did, someone else did better -- Tali was a better tech, Ash was a better soldier, Liara a better biotic, Wrex a better soldier/biotic mix, and Garrus a better soldier/tech mix.
The only thing that was unique about Kaidan was that he mixed soldier, tech, and biotic; but since you couldn't maximize ALL those fields (which would have obviously made him a powerful squad-mate, and worth bringing along)you usually ended up with a weak mixture of those three fields.
Also, his voice was irritating to me, and for a soldier, he mostly wanted to stand on the sidelines and let someone else make decisions (see his comments on the Rachni and the way he backs down IMMEDIATELY when you're making the choice between him and Liara)... again, for being a soldier, he doesn't really want to fight for anything. See Ashley for the flip side of this, a person who believes that win or lose, you FIGHT for EVERYTHING you believe in and stand for.
