Description Southern Utah is a beautiful area. It's very different from the Northern part where Salt Lake City is. This is a view from a rest area off the Freeway. Really just a shot from my trip. But I am always awed by our country, it's vastness and varied beauty makes me happy I am free to explore it as often as I like.

wow this looks so vast, and uninhabited. You feel like you could so easily get lost in that beautiful land. I would love to backpack through there, just me and my camera seeing what I could find amongs the rocks. Such raw beauty is wonderful to find

It is vast ... and very arid. You can hike the National Parks there... Bryce and Zion which are very near that location. Probably not mid summer. I'd think spring or autum would be best. I want to do it too!

Beautiful shot. I'm just confounded by good scenic shots, because I've no real sense of how to approach landscape work. I want to focus on some little weed growing near my feet instead of great vistas. So far, all I've seen of Utah is the Salt Lake airport, and that doesn't count. I really want to see the rock formations at Bryce and Zion. Thanks for this shot. It's great.

myrnajacobs In reply to Cheshire118 [2005-10-30 20:44:32 +0000 UTC]

I believe this was shot down close to Zion... but not certain. My husband is like you, he is really a macro guy... mostly gets closeups of things. I do both.

Just think of the landscape like a whole legal case laid out in front of you. there are going to be ways to look at it that put it in a better perspective... and there are going to be certain focal points.. and it needs to be easily grasped but interesting enough to keep the attention of the jury or judge. Dumb legal analogy..and I think the details are vital so keep shooting your close up things.. it's whatever your aesthetic is..

Your advice was very similar to what my artist daughter has told me. Just find something, and use that to organize the shot. I'm going to do some experimenting with the new lens. In the meantime though, I'll be nosing around up close. The legal analogy was good, actually. You have to have a sense of the entire case (all the issues and all the evidence that needs to be admitted), and then you go from there, making sure that you clear up confusion as you go (or at least at the end). And you have to do your damndest not to be surprised. In photography, though, surprises can be treasures. Not in the courtroom.

Courtroom surprises are rarely good ones.... eek..

Your daughter is right... but as I said, sometimes we have a way of seeing things artistically and it just doesn't feel 'right' to do something else.

You know what's odd about these pictures you've been taking? They are so beautiful, and perfect , it's almost like they are 3D or digital! What a switcharound that it! Breath taking and REAL! ( You're the only I think who has accomplished this)

I learned an interesting trick in PS that may have something to do with it. Goes like this. Create a duplicate layer> add emboss filter> take down the opacity to almost zero (maybe 5 or 6 %)>flatten layers> boost contrast a little bit. It seems to enhance the 3-D quality. You have to mess around with it a bit and sometimes adjust color some... but that's the basic idea.

Thanks for noticing! I learned that in a PS quick tips book.

Seems like you have a beautiful open nature there.
Here its all buildings and stuff.
You must feel very free when you drive on that road...

myrnajacobs In reply to Zibro [2005-10-30 17:29:43 +0000 UTC]

The USA is very very large and there are vast areas of open land... some of it national parks but not most of it. There are areas with buildings all over.... like in the Los Angeles area, along the Eastern coast line near NYC and really almost all our coastlines. But there are huge areas in the middle of our country that is very very open... along freeways and along good roads. You should come visit sometime.

What a superb photo! I like all your widescreen landscape pics very much. The format and the black bars underline the vastness. When I visited Grand Canyon and some other National Parks of the West some years ago I was overwhelmed by the vastness. Btw - Grand Canyon is as long as the whole of Germany from North to South.

myrnajacobs In reply to MisterKrababbel [2005-10-30 06:33:59 +0000 UTC]

Is that true.. amazing! As long as Germany! Wow... no wonder I feel lightheaded as I stand near the edge looking at it!

MisterKrababbel In reply to myrnajacobs [2005-10-30 16:54:04 +0000 UTC]

Endless vastness of landscapes is something that has always impressed me very much. And Germany belongs to the bigger countries of Europe - but compared to America? Alaska, Texas, California and Montana are each bigger than Germany. I was often surprised when I met American tourists in Germany and they told me they were travelling through 8 or 10 European countries within two weeks. But compared to the American vastness that's nothing unusual. You cross international borders, not internal ones, that's all the difference.

When my husband and I drive from Michigan to California or the other direction, we cross into 9 states. Thankfully there are no border guards or pass ports needed. LOL One of the things I love about Europe is that you can see so much of it in little time. (not well or intensely maybe but you can hit the high points).

Thanks. I did the photo in Nikon Raw. I don't usually do that but I knew that with such a vast view I'd lose definition otherwise.
