Description Flag:

A light blue flag with a red hammer and anvil. The hammer is overlaid on a white arc surrounding the anvil. A stylized white hand giving the Vulcan salute is overlaid on the anvil.

Symbolism:

The blue background represents the domain of the mythological namesakes of Ran and Aegir, the star and largest planet in the Epsilon Eridani system. The red hammer, red anvil, and white hand represent the commune's namesakes. The arc is a modification of ACS iconography and also imbues the hammer with a sense of motion.

History:

Before the Solar Revolution, Epsilon Eridani was largely unexplored, although a few subkilogram replicators were launched on an intercept course with the aid of lightsails and the Very Large Propulsion Array, a compound laser that accelerated beamriders for high velocity flybys and intercepts of other star systems. As the VLPA was the primary means of cheaply exploring the universe, and many of its component lasers were repurposed as improvised weapons, the Solar Revolution prevented further exploration except through then expensive metric vehicles. Epsilon Eridani was not settled or seriously explored until ~138 AR. Like many early extrasolar communes, the Commune of Vulcan was named by settlers before they even arrived. Modern avenues of exploration, while somewhat restricted by corporatist polities hubward and spinward of the ACS, are still much easier. Today, star systems are settled in a much more organic process without any centralized system of colony ships and thus are named later.

Epsilon Eridani is known for the spectacular ice belt, the Arc, which has been left intact as a natural wonder. Sadly, the pre-revolution beamrider replicators, which would not accept override signals or new orders due to corporate ownership and a QNP-complete password, consumed much of the inner dust belt in an attempt to construct a tight beam comms array before they were destroyed.

The governing center and most organic-populated body in the Epsilon Eridani system is Aegir’s largest moon, an icy body resembling Europa and named Snaer after the son of Ran and Aegir in Norse mythology. Notable computational and biological urban centers on and below the icy crust of Snaer include Roddenberry, Vulcan City, and Xanadu.
