Very informative. I like to draw dragons, but I could use a little polishing up, especially on the wings. This should help.

i agree with almost everything in your tutorial
dont get angry but IMHO the way you tell the legs is a little off
if they were just at that angle they would colapse and the rear legs in you side view in the way you have four parts also does not work
a four part leg to my knowledge does not lay flat as you show a four part are only able to a single point of gathering like a dog
if the end was an actual human foot that was four parts it would colapse due to improper weight placement
i also understand why you might disregaurd this comment as it is a "Mythical" creature
now if it were a three part hind leg it WOULD have a foot sorta like ours or better said like an apes but then the leg would have to be properly displaced for weight (ie salamanders and most lizards) and also the wings first part "needs" to be longer if a dragon were ever try to fly with a short first part id be like a chicken

but in reality these rules would ONLY apply if the dragon were to actually BE REAL so as i said IMHO
now i am done with my schpiel

Very nice! I like the musculature of the wings and the way they attach to the body. Cool to see another artist's perspective... maybe I should go draw a dragon, eh?

And whoa! Your handwriting is just like mine!

Ok, I don't mean offence, but you're making a tutorial how to draw a mythological creature CORRECTLY?

It's about letting your imagination wander, about having something nice to draw without having to worry about correct anatomy.

I think it's sad to see all these people saying they were no good at drawing dragons, just because you made a tutorial how to do it 'properly'.

Good scheme though, I have to admit -- take something, that people have been using in art and having fun with for years, dress it up nicely and proffessional-looking (yeah, I'll give you that) and say how to do it 'right'. That way, you can't be wrong, can you?

So to everyone who wants to take tips from this -- this is not 'THE' way to draw dragons, it's 'A' way to draw dragons. Let your imagination wonder, you have fun, don't worry about all this 'anatomy' crap.
What matters is how it looks to you, making it look right, having fun -- not worrying about what it looks like biologically.

It takes the fun out of fantasy dragon art.

If you want to debate this, feel free -- this is just my opinion.

mythori In reply to Applesourjellybeans [2006-02-25 09:53:08 +0000 UTC]

I never said that they would be correct
I told people how I draw the
not how they need to draw them

ColdmanJJ In reply to Applesourjellybeans [2006-02-25 04:44:38 +0000 UTC]

i must agree and disagree
for the truely creative let their minds be free

but for those stuck in reality (like me) we tend to enjoy creating things that if it were true and lived it could function properly if you know what i mean
so i have now no idea why i am typing this as you are correct this is not "THE" way to but a variation
but for those who wanted a decent tut on a more realistc sense and look it is pretty good except for my few issues listed below
but this is an opinion as well so...... yay for thaught (^^,)

Hey, I didn't think of it like that. That's a very valid point and I understand and agree with it.
My opinion remains unchanged, but perhaps if the artist made it obvious about what you just said is what the tutorial is aiming for, I would've been less likely to criticise it.

Thankyou for sharing.

love dragons, great tutorial

Actually, birds come from certain kind of dinosaurs, so it's not weird too think about lizards or dinosaurs evoluting to have wings I like to imagine how could had been evolution of mitologic creatures if they would had actually existed

it's kinda stupid because every artist should figure stuff like these on their own..
1- because until they will learn anatomy of animals and lizards they dont stand a chance anyway..
2- they should have theyre own style and feeling and concept about how dragons ought to be..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

madonnawayne In reply to ShoeMan [2006-02-25 23:01:47 +0000 UTC]

I'm sure Myth will reply to this BUT...I must say that this is more than a little impolite.

Are how to draw people books useless to beginning artists? I mean, this is exactly the same as that.
It teaches you basic anatomy, and is a great jumping off people for even experienced artists like myself who need more than a little guidance on how to draw things like dragons. I must say I never figured out how to draw on my own without books and teacher's helping me learn.

But that is just my opinion, so...yeah. Anyways. Good day to you.

ShoeMan In reply to madonnawayne [2006-02-25 23:46:18 +0000 UTC]

i'm more intersted in what myth has to say then you but whatever..

it's allright to use anatomy books on people and animals but it's wrong to put your conception on a mythical creature in others head..

i've seen way too many "baby" artist seeing one tutorial about whatever and just stuck with the style they saw instead of
just using the information the got to help them self figuuring stuff on their own..

it's allright to show animal anatomy but i really dont see the point of doing "how to draw dragons tutorial.."
maybe its ok if you name it "how to draw dragons my way" because really most of the people who will learn from this will just end up copying myth's style..

have a better day then mine..
