Description My second competent attempt at colour pencils. The whole process took quite a long time; I'd estimate at least 20 hours, but not nearly as long as the previous Barrows Rebirth [link]

Overall I technically used around 15 different colours in this, but by far the most used were indigo, brown, gold/tan, and red/maroon. I used the indigo so much in fact that it was once a full 20cm and now it's less than 5, the gold and brown are pretty worn too.

I guess anyone who has strolled through my gallery can see that this is the elaborated version of Mother Barrows in colour. And, you may have noticed that this Barrows, does not in fact have the classic feather wings. I suppose it's because I thought it may look a bit messy if I added them in and I guess you can count her as some sort of psychic necromancer who should naturally be able to fly.

I think I've improved in my colouring in here a lot more than in the first coloured Barrows, but in all honestly, I still prefer brutes with fat ass armour and wargear over the feminine touch.

For now though, I shall be taking a break from Barrows, but I'll come back to it in a month or so with my first full colour Barrows on canvas.

ROFL... What you should do is download it off the official Adobe website and download a crack for it.

I never knew you could download anything other than the demo off the official website without paying for it, even if you do need a crack

Uh... You know, the thing that you download is in fact the complete package, but you're only allowed to trial it for 30 days free, then you have to pay and receive a (really long) item code that you enter so that the rest of the features are unlocked.

Awesome job on this. It's really satisfying to finally be able to see all the details up close.

The only thing I'm not so sure about is the clarity of the book's pages and the horn where they overlap. I realise that both are part of the foreground, but it would be preferable if the horn had less contrast where it meets the book. Right now I get the feeling that they're connected even though I know they're not.

And her foot on the left... is it meant to be that short? Cause I'm expecting it extend further beyond that brown strip (sorry, I have no idea what it would be called, as you'd expect from me).

Fine drawing overall though. Your choice of colour never seems to be wrong.

Thank you for the more thorough feedback as always.

I'm afraid that I too have picked up those points that you raised. I guess I never really put in much time to redo or change anything after I "finished". I suppose I should have made the horn lighter, or added some glowing effect around the book to make it stand out, but I've already glossed over it and I can't rub anything out. About the foot, I guess I failed at making it feel the same length. In actual fact the legs up to where the ankles are, are the same length, it's just there's a feel that the feet are different due to that "Brown strip" (ROFL I don't even know what to call it, seeing that in the elaboration process, I create features that are completely extra and impractical in reality, and have nothing more than aesthetic purpose).

That last point brings me to say that: whatever you do, try to avoid "coincidence" as much as possible in art. e.g. it's either two things overlap or they don't, don't have stuff that are exactly on on the edge of each other. Depending on the context, stuff like that can make things look funny or distorted even if it's in a perfectly possible position. For my instance, I probably shouldn't have covered the feet with that *thing*.

I know what you mean about the "coincidence" or whatever it's called--I've experienced it myself various times. The main idea is to make something feel natural, and having two or three objects that fall right next to each other with no overlap or something always seems awkward. I find many times that imperfections (random order of objects or dents and scratches) make things look more realistic.

Lol you could just call it "the brown strip" then

I guess the smooth look is because the colour pencils I use have very soft leads so the colours blend and overlap beautifully.

This is stunning. I love the pallette of colours, and the costume design is so complex and interesting. May I ask, what is Barrows?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

n00brevolution In reply to AlanaKai [2011-03-23 03:06:15 +0000 UTC]

I suppose I owe the costume design to the original sketch I did more than a year ago. Barrows is the name of this series of OCs that I do; the name originated from a few characters from Runescape but that was five years ago and the look has drastically changed.

I'm absolutely amazed by this! Colouring and shading is ideal for me, if You don't midn I'd like to use it on my desktop or just save the file on my computer to look at Your pict and motivate myself to draw like You. Dark but alive, pretty anxious and symbolic. Feminine touch is not bad if it's made so well. I'll browse Your gallery with pleasure.
