I never even thought about the fact that drawing scales in a particular order would make it look man made... Extremely helpful, I really appreciate this tutorial!Ā Ā

Haha, thanks. Though this tutorial is really old and I'm more like ashamed of it, telling people what's right or wrong I'm glad you find it helpful, though.

No problem, I don't think it's bad at all.

Really? I thought there's not really much to comprehend. It's just about shading the whole shape, so it looks a bit rounded. But honestly, I think this isn't such a great tutorial, I think there must be a lot of better ones on DA

SavagingDragon [2011-10-03 15:01:01 +0000 UTC]

When I put scales on my dragons, I use pre-set texture-maps on Paint tool SAI ...
But this can help, because my hand-drawn scales look bad... (similar to third scale-set in middle-right in the examples)

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Nachiii In reply to SavagingDragon [2011-10-04 19:57:32 +0000 UTC]

I don't have Paint tool SAI, so I don't really know what those scales look like. But I always prefer to do textures such as scales, grass and all by my own. It just feels a bit like cheating to use some pre-defined brushes. There's also no wxperience I can get from it. So I encourage you to find your style in painting these stuff. I thing once you get the grip of it, it might become fun to draw . I'm glad you like my tutorial, thank you

could u make one on feathers too? thats the one thing i still fall on my face trying to draw

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Nachiii In reply to xCinderDragonx [2011-08-11 08:26:44 +0000 UTC]

I'm sorry, right now I'm quite bussy with several other pictures and I probably won't find time for it anytime soon. And I'm still not quite sure how to draw feathers so they would look realistic, either
But I bet there are already awesome tutorials on drawing feathers here on DA.

Your scales are so good. I usually don't have the patients for drawing each indevidual scale like that and shading too.

Thank you
I usually don't have the patience either, this tutorial only shows what it would look like, if I had

aelendal [2011-03-18 16:07:02 +0000 UTC]

it's actually a very good tutorial, especially the shading part
i have to say though that it doesn't look more natural when the scales are so different, look at snakes for example, the scales are perfectly shaped and sized, all the same.
that's my opinion^^

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Nachiii In reply to aelendal [2011-03-18 16:29:29 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. You're probably right about the snakes. I think it depends on how you draw it. If you draw the scales as I drew it and crossed it, it looks much more like roof tiles than scales. I really think it looks more lively and interesting if there's a little difference to each scale. But this is just my way of drawing dragon scales, not the universal truth .
