Description The projection of the map is done by two Lambert Azimuthal Equal Area hemispheres, arranged south-pole to south-pole (instead of the more usual east-side to west-side yo).

The map is populated by lots of pictures.

I don't think anything on this map has come from anywhere but my own hands. This doesn't even have fontage, because I used a neography (constructed script "conscript") of my own. At the most I traced animal photos to do the animals. The rhino-like creature was based on DΓΌrer's Rhino, the monoceros on a Wikipedia Commons picture of antilopes, the jumping birdwhale on a picture of a jumping orca and the gripps on dinosaur paintings. The mountains are hand-drawn, but the cities and trees I made brushes for.

I am quite happy with the human figures because I didn't use any model for them. The hands turned out surprisingly well in retrospect.

Some of the images on the map depict general knowledge about the world, but much is specific to the creator of the map. Within the story of Ysi, this map is unique -- there is no other world map on that Earth. Its creation is a consequence of my novel, King of Nowhere, and later stories (and the rewrite of King of Nowhere) will go more into de- agh god

i just remembered a great picture i should have added

from KoNW

i mean

it's a pretty big thing to forget

Eh.

I'll live.

urgh, I fail at making realistic-looking continents or maps. How.

Well, maybe you're the kind of person who can use tectonics as the base? That's a good place to start. I bet there's at least a few tutorials on the net on how to do it.

This is really amazing and I enjoy all the little details. What do the red glyphs that aren't word represent? Things that would be on a key? city, capital city, and so on.
I would worry about the weather, though, on a planet that had barely two continents (maybe three? how many do you consider there to be?) to interrupt the ocean's churning.
Sorry, I'm just excited. I'm not just extrapolating from this map: I've looked at your other script samples, and the script appears very clean and efficient without being repetitive. Very nice.

Yeah, they're "town or city, bigger city, biggest city", etc. If you noticed, some of them are upside down: those are underground settlements.
These two continents are large ones. If there weren't any continents at all, the oceans would travel around the globe in an east-west (or west-east idunrecall) direction. These continents block that path, like a twin-set of Americas: this planet has less east-west streams than our own planet.
Anyhow, thanks for the comments.
There are just two continents.

I like how this map is made to look like a medieval Chinese map even though it may not be made to look so.^^

Naeddyr In reply to Etsin-tyen [2009-08-02 08:39:01 +0000 UTC]

It's the maze decorations in the sides, isn't it? I didn't go consciously for a Chinese look, but I guess it has to look like *something*.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Etsin-tyen In reply to Naeddyr [2009-08-04 14:40:24 +0000 UTC]

The mazes give it a Persian or Greek sort of look. The whole map itself from the colours, the tiny symbols you placed, the curve of the waves, the picture you've you on the map(clouds and animals and the Chinese junk like ship),the vertical direction of the script and last but not least at the bottom part of the map the continent looks vaguely like Japan. If you've seen a medieval
Chinese Map you'd know what I'm talking about.

Wow! This has to become a DD!!!

It's truly amazing! The conscript is used to write a conlang as well or is it for Finnish?

It's mostly nonce words I made up on the spot. The script would go with a certain phonology and -tactics, but this is a world-map, so I guess there's some Engrish-equivalency going on as names are transliterated into the language this map is written in.

Sokail-t3h-noobie In reply to Naeddyr [2009-05-25 13:47:05 +0000 UTC]

Great! You know, I have several conlangs on the run (two of them have a more or less complete grammar and syntax set) but I have not yet been able to organize a complete vocabulary (and now that I come to think of it, the vocabulary and phonology can greatly affect grammar... anyway ). Not even a Swadesh list... If you have any ideas, or advices on how to form a set of vocabulary, anything is welcome (for the time being, I'm trying to devise basic sets of words and them give them to friends to assign meaning on them. But this is time-consuming... Anyway, it's rare for me to find a person with these interests of ours and when I do, I get carried away with the conversation. Sorry for the huge message...!

I've never finished any conlang I've started, so I'm the wrong person to ask. You should try lurking [link] for a while, etc.

Very beautiful map. Very reminiscient of midieval maps, but with a unique feel. I can definitely see this coming from an alien culture. The script is quite beautiful as well -- is it from a full-fledged conlang?

I'd be interested in how your compass rose works, as well as the hints of cosmology in what appear to be 'lanets and moons' in the margins.

I almost want a print of this map for my wall. Much more visually detailed and appealing than anything I've made so far.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Naeddyr In reply to Ollock [2009-04-23 20:52:31 +0000 UTC]

The compass thing is because the map is made out of two hemispheres touching at one point. Thing is, on this map, that point is the south pole: thus, the lower hemisphere is rotated 180, and south is "up". The compass rose just shows that the upper hemisphere has North up, East left and West right, while South is in the middle and vice versa.

The cosmology depicted here is tychonian! The sun is depicted as orbitin Earth, and the other planets (but not the Earth's moons) orbit the Sun.

Ollock In reply to Naeddyr [2009-04-23 21:05:50 +0000 UTC]

That is quite interesting. Is there a significance to the shape of the continents. It seems like they make a north-south ring around the planet, each with a substantial portion touching a pole.
