Doing the base like that doesn't work for me anymore. I used to do it when I was still learning, but after one point in time, it started hindering me. Now I draw all the poses out of my head, without any "doll" as base.
I know it's not the best way to draw human/humanoid characters, but it works for me.

I also do this most of the time now. It's just from so much practice I guess. I kind of get a 3D image of the pose in my head all planned out and then just manipulate it if it doesn't look good on paper for some reason. This still works wonders for beginners, though.
