Description Well, it was supposed to be just a ProMarker tutorial, but I ended up showing the whole progress of the picture, including all the cut and glue stuff.

It's a big file, but tutorials tend to be that way so deal with it.

Sorry if there are typos, I checked and double checked but there's bound to be at least one anyway. D:

Now I'm curious how you do it, the only way I really know is my own after all.

Mine isn't special in any way, I just make all my stuff look plain, I don't use different colors for one thing like one should be doing. That's why I thought to try out something familiar to what you're doing because I thought it looked super neat!

Nashimus In reply to Trubaduren [2016-03-02 19:50:26 +0000 UTC]

Ohh. Well, it certainly does bring the colors to a whole new level, even though it may seem intimidating to mix them up at first. But then you start to get a feel to what shades mix well and which ones don't~

Oh yes! I tried it out earlier today as a test and it turned out rather well on the first try! I am going to continue practicing it but I'm enjoying it so far at least!

Nashimus In reply to Hardsara [2015-11-12 17:51:49 +0000 UTC]

Well, for small streaks it works like an eraser, at least for me. But it can smudge the lineart if you're not careful, especially if you use the outliner that comes in the same package as the markers. Those things smudge like crazy!

Could I ask what paper you use? It really brings out the colour of the ink

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nashimus In reply to BlueHorizon89 [2015-06-16 17:54:40 +0000 UTC]

The paper brand I use is Canson but I'm not sure which particular one was used here, either Canson Illustration or Canson Imagine... Generally speaking I use 200-250gsm paper for markers and 300gsm for watercolors.

BlueHorizon89 In reply to Nashimus [2015-06-17 08:46:28 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for responding so fast!
So, is 200-250gsm paper good for blending?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nashimus In reply to BlueHorizon89 [2015-06-17 15:35:26 +0000 UTC]

Was I fast? XD;;
Do you mean with the actual colorless blender or just in general? Because the blender kinda makes the colors look grayish to me, I rarely use it for what it was really made for. But blending colors with each other works out okay, though I've only used actual bleed proof marker paper a couple of times (I don't like how light it is). So I'm not sure whether blending is easier or harder with the thicker paper, I'm just used to it! The colors do bleed a tiny bit but it's relatively easy to control, at least compared to regular copying paper.

BlueHorizon89 In reply to Nashimus [2015-06-18 08:43:09 +0000 UTC]

Yes XD
Just in general. I've been using watercolour paper with some nice results, but it's SOOO expensive T_T
I've been eager to try out the Letraset Marker Paper but I've heard mixed reviews about it. I want to be certain before splashing out my money on it

Nashimus In reply to BlueHorizon89 [2015-06-18 16:33:44 +0000 UTC]

Well then, I'd say try the Canson Imagine (dessin blanc), it's the 200gsm one. Huh, apparently it's labeled as watercolor paper too, go figure (I think it's okay for everything except watercolors!). Anyway, it has 50 A4 sheets and costs about 10€, which I guess is approximately 7£. To me that's a pretty good quality-price ratio.

I'll go for that I recently bought a pad specifically for markers and it's like tracing paper o-0 However, it doesn't bleed through to the other side. I'm not sure I like it :/

Nashimus In reply to BlueHorizon89 [2015-06-19 17:16:33 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I have plenty of those too but I really don't like paper so thin. Even if it is bleed proof.

Thanks very much for your time ^-^

Jesus, this has to be one of the most helpful things I've read in about a year.
Promarker tutorials are hard to find...
I've finally figured out what I'm doing wrong I treating the promarkers like copics, soft and wispy
whereas actually promarkers are better for bold, colourful pictures
anyway, thanks so much for making this, the tips on hair, skin and material were particulary useful and the finished pic looks amazing

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nashimus In reply to xZ-e-r-o [2013-06-14 14:31:58 +0000 UTC]

I haven't been able to use copics enough to notice the difference between the two markers, but now that you mention it, copic works do look a lot softer than promarker works!
Anyway, I'm really happy that you found this helpful.

WereWolf96 [2013-02-07 15:38:15 +0000 UTC]

Ooh.. It turned out really good! o3o
Have you ever tried to do the shadows first and after that.. Color the whole part? And you don't start with the brighter colors? o:

Oh, and btw.. What exactly is the name of that "white gel pen"? XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nashimus In reply to WereWolf96 [2013-02-07 18:20:24 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I've tried that too. With skin I'm just more careful since it's not fun if you accidentally make it too dark. But with everything else I like to experiment.

And the gel pen I use is Gelly Roll medium tip gel pen: [link]

But I'm pretty sure any kind of gel pen goes. I usually try them out at stores before buying. First I draw a little ball on a paper with a black pen, then I use the white gel pen on top of it. If it's visible on the black area, it'll work fine with markers too.

WereWolf96 In reply to Nashimus [2013-02-07 19:20:43 +0000 UTC]

Oh, ok
Hmm.. I wonder if I can find any of those here in sweden.. Last time I asked for a pen that should be able to do white lines on top of marker colors.. They said that they didn't have any.. But I'll try the thing you do next time to see if they were wrong or not XD

Nashimus In reply to WereWolf96 [2013-02-07 19:33:51 +0000 UTC]

I'm from Finland and from a very small town too, and even I was able to find one from here! xD Usually bookstores sell pens and other art supplies, but the clerks don't know much about the products they're selling. So you'll have to try things out to find what you're looking for. In an actual art supply store the clerks probably know a lot more (well, hopefully).

WereWolf96 In reply to Nashimus [2013-02-07 19:45:36 +0000 UTC]

I looked in an art supply store called "Panduro", and that's where they said it.. But I think I've seen something that might be a gel pen... Need to test it the next time I go there XD

Golden-Stargazer [2012-11-16 13:41:41 +0000 UTC]

do u use regular printer paper or special marker paper?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Nashimus In reply to Golden-Stargazer [2012-11-16 14:36:39 +0000 UTC]

I use two different kinds of paper for Promarkers, both of them work a bit differently. For the picture in this tutorial I used Canson Illustration paper, which is very thick, 250g/m2(90lbs): [link]
This paper I use when I work on something serious and if I'm not completely sure what coloring tools I'll be using; the paper works well with pencils, ink, markers and watercolors!
The other paper type I use is Canson XL Croquis 90g/m2(43lbs) -paper, which is basically a sketchbook, and I use it for marker tests, sketches, and sometimes bigger works too if I've happened to draw a nice picture in there: [link]

I don't encourage anyone to use printer paper for markers, it just absorbs in all the color and then the colors also spread out easily.

and how do you blend and not blend? xD i heard that the blender marker doesnt really work...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

oOLittleLemonOo In reply to Golden-Stargazer [2012-12-19 12:08:50 +0000 UTC]

You just have to colour on the base colour as it's still wet.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

oOLittleLemonOo [2012-11-15 18:00:41 +0000 UTC]

The colors are so homogenous, it always leave marks when I colour with promarkers x)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nashimus In reply to oOLittleLemonOo [2012-11-15 19:01:01 +0000 UTC]

True, it could be hard to try and make a picture with flat colors. But if you add shadows it's easier to blend away the uneven surface. Though ultimately I think you can do anything if you practise hard enough!

Tuhannetmiljoonat kiitokset tästä tutoriaalista! Selkeytti asiaa huomattavasti, ehkä minä nyt opin markerien käytön.
Vielä kerran, kiitos!

En tiedä miksi, mutta minusta on hirmu kiva saada suomenkielisiä kommentteja! 8D

Ugh, this makes me want to have markers so bad . But I'd be too afraid to make mistakes and wouldn't use them anyway. Probably.

It was a fun tutorial to read though, and I guess the layering-thing can come in quite handy with pencils as well.

Nashimus In reply to xShasha-Chan [2012-09-17 19:22:58 +0000 UTC]

I felt the same way too when I first started using markers, but that's only natural. You're bound to make mistakes at first, but you'll learn from them. Maybe trying them out on not-so-important sketches would be wise until you get the hang of it, that's what I tried to do!
