Hum, well it's possible to make edits, but it depends on the model, certain resources aren't okay to edit, so you gotta be carefull!
But there are plenty of tutorials teaching how to create original models on PMX editor, and there are also a lot of great resources around which are free to download and to edit, take a look at youtube and here on DeviantArt!
