Description This is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights written in a constructed language of mine called Avonese, which I began making almost four years ago when I was sitting on the balcony of the internet-free apartment of my grandparents in Budapest, Hungary. In my third and final year of high school, I made it into my project, which sped up development a lot, resulting in me being able to write this.

The reason I used the UDHR is because it's used as an example by a language site that I visit once a week called omniglot.com.

Romanized, it would look like this:

"Muŋfifydy łom o sạjš äv vrom ȟmannmoń, şạfifem łom äv allvurinım łom. Mạđkạ äv ṙạvṙ özdam äv eǧdørømạss-eǧdipridạss şutajim eǧdmorzınistor sạnminił."

---

UPDATE:

Even as I was creating this, I had an idea for it to be used by elves in some sort of fantasy setting. When me and my friend finally came up with the idea for Hrek, I thought that would be a perfect place for it to be. In Hrek, Avonese is an elven language spoken on by the inhabitants of an island called Avonia ("Avonaj" in the language) and is a member of the Nasarunese family of elven languages. It is popularly known for being the "ugliest elven language", having developed numerous phonemes that are unusual to most other elven languages, and also for having developed a vertical and more stylized writing system, in contrast the the horizontal and more flowing script of its parent language: Akdabali. It split from Akdabali after the crew of the slave ship Noþurín became shipwrecked on Avonia and established a new society there.

this almost reminds me of "aksara beringin" on omniglot, essentially another way to write in Indonesian just like this one

Cool. Would you make one with my conlang ceorzai? I would like to see you try it.

Nederbird In reply to Alisbet [2011-10-12 16:10:09 +0000 UTC]

I could try. All I need to know is the alphabet in full as well as the necessary vocabulary for the words, plus grammar. If you can prepare the text in Romanized form, I could make an image with the native characters.

Well, the alphabet is still in it's early stage I am afraid and the vocabulary is not comprehensive either. If you want some samples, you can find some ceorzai vocabulary in my gallery with more to come later, perhaps even including words in the UDHR.

That's a beautiful-looking language! I especially like how it goes vertically.

Thank you!

I took some inspiration from the Mongolian, since I also liked how it was written and read from top to bottom.

That´s really awesome! It´s surely difficult to invent an own language and letters and this one looks so exotic!
Do you already know, how it would sound? Similar to which real language?

Nederbird In reply to Arminius1871 [2011-05-20 15:31:07 +0000 UTC]

Aye, I do have the phonology all set up and done, a good bit of grammar as well. What's mostly lacking is a good bit of vocabulary.

I can't say it sounds much like any real language. It's mostly a hotch-potch of all the languages I'm familiar with: Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Hungarian, Finnish, Persian, German, English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian etc, so there are words that sound radically different from each other and different words remind you of different languages.

It's supposed to be an Elven language for a fantasy universe that me and a friend of mine developed (and stopped developing) a long time ago. It was also supposed to be the ugliest sounding Elven language in existence. XD

Arminius1871 In reply to Nederbird [2011-05-20 15:38:05 +0000 UTC]

Wow it´s made of that many languages?! Seems to be really difficult!
But why should it be bad-sounding? XD It´s only a question of habit^^
You should go on with that world^^

Nederbird In reply to Arminius1871 [2011-05-20 15:50:03 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know. In the beginning I was just making it because I was bored, thinking of random words and writing down the first syllables that popped up in my head. Suffice to say, it's pretty varied. Later, the goal became make it as complicated as possible. XD

I don't know, I tried to make it sound ugly I guess. Usually when you hear Elven languages it's full of a bunch of Ls and Ns and Rs interspaced by vowels, while picked the oddest sounds like the throaty gulps from Arabic, the CH sounds from language like German, Irish and Mongolian, and the Ž sounds that we find in most Celtic languages. Then mix 'em all together and spice it all up with ridiculously long words and consonant clusters and you get something that sounds like Cthulu trying to hawk up some phlegm. XD

Yeah, I've been thinking about it. I might do some now in summer when I don't have any studies. I'll be going to Hungary to, which means I'll have no internet connection whatsoever, which in turn means I might work more on my language and its world.

Achso you wanted it to sound ugly XD haha lol.

Yes, I think all that standard elven-languages base on Tolkiens elve-language and he studied old-germanic and finnish as far as I know and he mixed it up.

haha yes our ch XD Americans can only say k when I try to teach it XD
What about ü? It´s in German, French and Japanese, but many don´t get the difference between ü and u, although it´s just a mix of u and e at the same time.

I think the most easiest and best sounding words are just made of a harmonic change of vocals and consonants without any difficult louds like ch or th and so on.

But it´s boring XD A language must have an own character, own difficult sounds and such^^

Why is there no internet-con in Hungary? XD Use a laptop and surf-stick^^ But maybe it´s good, you can work on then and present us your cool works

Nederbird In reply to Arminius1871 [2011-05-21 18:14:19 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'll be living at my grandparents place in Budapest and they don't internet connection. They don't think they need any, but I doubt they be able to understand how a computer works if they had any either. XD

A surf-stick sounds like a good idea. My only worry is if it'd only work in the country I bought it in or not.

Arminius1871 In reply to Nederbird [2011-05-21 18:17:44 +0000 UTC]

Hm it depends on the company where you buy the stick. But true, maybe it works only in Hungary then XD Hey could you make some pics of the hungaryan parliament-building? It´s so beautiful **
