Description The map of the territorial changes and major naval battles of the First Arctic War. Including the first use of Ice Breaker warships, the entire war lasted just three months, during one summer, and besides the labelled naval battles also included land campaigns in Europe (the USSR annexing Denmark and Finland) and in North America (Chinese and USSR troops made up the bulk of the invasionary force into Alaska). The Treaty of Ontario was signed in the autumn of the same year, with America and Canada surrendering vast swathes of land, and both Denmark and Finland giving up sovereignty to Britain and the USSR. The Alaskan territory, while under control of the USSR, has been socialised, with the resources of the territory being divided between the members of the ComCom based on need as well as contribution to the war.

Why not just take all of the District of Franklin?

Now this is new! I've never seen anyone creating a scenario set in Arctic conditions, even though that scenario isn't too unlikely, considering the abundance of natural resources in those regions.

I remember suggesting the addition of an Antarctic War scenario to a mod on a forum once and the idea was instantly shot down. Glad to see someone finally thinking a bit outside the box. ^^

lol, thanks. It's a problem of western cartography and culture, really - for starters, we're always shown the north and south edges of the map as being nice, stretched out, empty expanses, and you don't realise how close Russia and Canada/Alaska actually are. Secondly, movies and the like always tell us that the arctic and antarctic are barren wastelands, only good for polar bears and penguins - they don't usually mention the metallic wealth and the oil

Well if it wasn't for the oil, even the USA wouldn't care much about Alaska in OTL present.

Can I assume then that this war was fought over natural resources in the Arctic?

Yup, both the oil/wood/metals in Alaska, and the oil/metals at the bottom of the Arctic Sea - betweeen the First and Second Arctic War most of the summers, ice-free by this point, saw the Arctic chocked with Commmunist rigging platforms and dredgers. In the build up to AW2, the last few years saw most of the Arctic region's resources completly depleted.

Because devastating the Aral Sea wasn't enough for the USSR...

lol, indeed If it makes you feel better, after the SECOND Arctic War, most of the fighting will take place off Earth...

I'm getting more and more interest in this timeline. Does it have a name? Dirty Redcoats?

lol, none, unfortunately... I'm sort of developing the current and future timeline, rather than the events leading up to this world. The current working name for it all is just "Communist Commonwealth".

Oh Ok. Trying not to end up like Stirling trying to explain where the Domination came from?

lol indeed. Honestly, the idea of the Arctic Wars are far more interesting to me than trying to come up with a dry and accurate AAR from WW2 onwards >_<

Ok then.
Oh by the way, do you ever go the the Alternate History Wikia? Sturgeons Law applies but 1983 Doomsday is really rather good.

Indeed, I keep an eye on it every month or so, to keep up with the changes to Doomsday. I began writing up the Anglo-Iberia universe on there myself, but I got distracted and never got around to fleshing it out properly...

Yeah I tried to put something up there in 08 or 07 but it was too much work.
