Description
"Found on the second world Serpens-51, Capricon, the Sakuran Thundershark (dubbed Pacheyolamnidae electricis by on-survey biologists) is a medium to large sized coastal and shallow pelagic predator. Like other life on Serpens-51c the Thundershark uses blood rich in fluorescent hemocyanin and is clad in bony armor to protect from the bite of larger predators or rivals, and has a photosensitive and electrosensitive line system as visual organs. What makes this species particularly notable and successful is lower social behavioral instincts, leading them to travel, hunt, and nest in small groups of a handful individuals, as well as significant electrogenic properties allowing them to discharge static electric pulses of up to 500 volts to stun nearby prey or attackers.
Typically tan, grey, reddish, and luminescent blue in color they are well-camouflaged along rocky seabeds, forests of kelp-analogs, reefs, and mangrove shores, where they swim at a vertical stroke (like a dolphin) by using their muscular side keels for eel-like motion that is highly precise and quiet when stalking for prey like ambush predators, but they also retain the powerful caudal fluke and pectoral fins of their fully-pelagic relatives which allow them to reach impressive speeds in open waters and snatch prey as pursuit predators when they swim at a horizontal stroke (like sharks). While this generalist nature has made them ubiquitous across all major bodies of water on their planet and principal predator of all salmon-sized and cod-sized local fish, along with making them successful scavengers, their attitude towards humans is one of caution, curiosity, and playfulness: while no attacks on humans are known, they often snatch the equipment or samples of marine explorers, even peeking up above the surface near boats or beaches to investigate the strange bipedal creatures."
