Yep sorta. More like volunteer for a high Intake shelter. Like fostering cats and helping at adoption centers. And I've heard the DUMBEST excuses when animals are surrendered. One time while I was at the shelter waiting to pick up a foster cat from her spay, a mother was dumping her cat with her son. The young kid kept asking why they were giving the cat away. The mother kept saying that living arrangements were changing and I didn't have time, blah blah blah. The boy said it didn't make any sense. And he was right.
Now I have to bite my tongue most of the time because any outbursts can get me in trouble with the supervisors and that would hurt the animals that I rescue. But I couldn't hold my yap shut for long. While the mother was still in line, I walked up to the boy, bent down and whispered the truth:
"Your mom's an idiot."
And I walked out with my rescued cat.

Sigh. It's sad when people don't want to keep the pets when they're adult animals. It seems like, well, a betrayal. I get really upset when pets are given as gifts, especially seasonal ones; how many of those animals will be wanted for their entire lives?
Why did that woman bring her son along to watch their pet being surrendered? How could that possibly NOT make it worse?

Baby chicks and bunnies often get dumped around this time. The shelter had a small animal room and that gets filled quickly after Easter.
One time, I actually had a neighbor knock on my door and wanted me to take her TWELVE year old cat because she found out the cat had diabetes. She was crying and wiping her eyes with a tissue. I had a tissue but was using it to wipe my sandwich crumbs. I explained how easy it is to give them their shots rx by the vet and she agreed to work it out and left. Afterwards, my sis sniggered and said how I could be so callous. I shrugged and said I'm only that way when I see crocodile tears and that weepin' willow wanted me to feel sorry for her. Sorry, but after years of dealing with this crap, I've heard/seen it all.
I can't tell ya how many parents bring their kids with when they are dumping their animals. Don't they have friends or a sitter for pete's sake? It's like they wanna enforce the throw-away society on their family line. XP
Fostering allows an animal to be in a safe environment while a home is found. You provide food and TLC and the basic vet care is covered by the shelter or rescue group. I lost count how many cats I took in. Most would have been euth'ed if I didn't take 'em. I have a folder with a couple hundred of files of cats that I saved, fostered, or had neutered, just in case I need to pull up an old file.
