I wanted to do a modernized take on SMW's Mario sprite, hopefully one that captures the original feel, but doesn't look rather dated by today's pixel art standards.The original is on the left, and the new one I've made from scratch is on the right. I might do more of this in the future for a small project I'm thinking of.

Hi, I'm actually remaking Super Mario World with lots of new features (like widescreen, mod support and 2-players simultaneously), I was looking for newer graphics that have the SMW feel but looks better...
I really liked your style, I was hopping you release a spritesheet of something, but I may be asking for too much
Either way, here's how my remake's engine was looking, I'm redoing most of it to add better physics (was having problems with slopes), and improving the camera, that I got pretty close to the original!

I actually did want to get the colors to be more like the original's, but I couldn't figure out how to make it look very good.
A lot of Nintendo's old graphics had this weird charm to them that I can't really explain. I mean as an artist, it looks like they simply should not work and would be a badly designed sprite, but yet when you look at it, it kinda just feels right anyway(this even applies to their N64 games sometimes).
And I've seen no one except Nintendo do that in their games. With this style I want to find out what exactly that secret is, but still keep the modern look.

Colour can be a cruel mistress. I do think it's one of the most fun parts for me though. Teal and pinkish red hell here I come.
I never really noticed, but I don't think my eye is as refined as yours. It might be the fact that the art of these older pixel games are so ingrained in culture right? Maybe "culture" isn't the right word, but I hope you get kind of where I'm coming from.

I don't really know if it's refinement or not, tbh my art standards may actually be lower than non-artists in some ways.
But the standards of the people I'm usually around are very high, so I always try to push further with my art, even if I think it's alright as is, and research the art people find to be very good, so hopefully I can understand what great art is. Ultimately, it's very confusing but I think I'm starting to figure things out.
