Description
DeviantArt is not just an image hosting site. Some people submit pictures they did not create from scratch so everyone can have "easier access to them", while others falsely claim they made the content.Related content

guess what? I saw a user "make" a piece of art called "my drawing"
however it was made by her "twin cousin" that was origanally called "sally and the cat crew"

Serious question, but what if it's something like an MMD or source filmmaker picture? I mean, the model isn't theirs, but they made the picture, designed them etc. And that's sortaΒ the point of the program.Β Are you alright about that? But yeah, I find the "easier access" thing super annoying. 8/

I'm not an admin or anything, but like you said if you haven't made the model yourself the same rules still apply and you probably shouldn't post it. However, you can upload them on other sites and then link to them in your journals if you want to. As they're not in your gallery, you're not breaking any rules.

What if the they allow you to post it and use the models? I'm pretty sure Valve allows people to use TF2/L4D models in SFM, as long as it's credited and stuff. The companyΒ allow people to use their models to animate movies. I'm sorry if I sound sarcastic, but to me these situations seem like an exception to me :L

Source Filmmaker is different because it's also owned by Valve, deviantART isn't. Maybe you could contact the site staff here?

True that. I guess you can contact them for permission uses and stuff.

Giving credit changes absolutely nothing.

It doesn't matter whether or not you've credited the proper owner, it's still considered copyrighted and you still need permission.

Even with warning stamps, people wont give a shit of it and probably some of them still continuing stealing like they dont have anything else to do than just being art thiefs.

Same goes for relatives? I mean I let my sister submit my artwork in her accound because ... I personally don't like it or it's fan-art. I don't do fan-art.

Neslug In reply to Madda-Archive [2011-08-03 13:28:42 +0000 UTC]
Well if the piece in question has been made by you in its entirety and permission is given to another user to submit it, there isn't a problem with that as far as site rules are concerned. Thanks for your concern anyway, there are still too many people on this site who don't seem to care one bit about the rulings.

sashamya [2010-12-18 05:28:10 +0000 UTC]
Yes. Yes. Yes.
Sadly, when this general rule is pointed out to people who post stuff that isn't theirs there is a general "Other people do it." response, or they just block you and hide your comment.
π: 0 β©: 1
Neslug In reply to sashamya [2010-12-19 13:17:00 +0000 UTC]
I know, that has happened to me to the point I usually won't bother posting a comment to say they're breaking the rules, and instead just head over to the report button right off the bat. What makes it worse that everyone else in the comments section always seems to be completely oblivious to this and praising said submission.

sashamya In reply to Neslug [2010-12-19 20:15:52 +0000 UTC]
Part of me is idealistic and hopes that maybe they just don't realize they're breaking a (really obvious) rule. I should probably know better. A lot of them just repost stuff when it's taken down, though. It'd be nice if the admins just banned people who continuously uploaded and reuploaded stolen things :\. And the people favin/gushing in the comments drive me insaaaane.

How to avoid all this: implement a system that makes the site's board of administrators go through every submission before they publicly show up.
Well at least that looks good on paper.

sashamya In reply to Neslug [2010-12-19 23:08:38 +0000 UTC]
With how long it takes them to respond to reports it'd probably take weeks before each picture went up. I think they need to deputize some lower-tier admins in charge of going through and taking down junk that breaks tos. But then there's the chance that people would go mad with power.

I definitely agree with you. Some people need to get it into their brains that this is a place to post their own art. Not someone else's.
I'm so faving this.

Have you noticed several "Demotivational" uploads here on DA? They're just asking for the report button to be pressed.
π: 0 β©: 1
Neslug In reply to DragonQuestWes [2010-05-31 13:13:08 +0000 UTC]
Yes, but they're far too numerous to ever get them all down.

Sorry to reply to an old reply, but that's just about how sprite edits are, too (too many). It's quite a pity.
I feel like a terrible person for not reporting demotivational posters; I can't help but just find a lot of them so funny. Kidding, but nonetheless.

Neslug In reply to SassySnivy [2012-05-17 12:34:03 +0000 UTC]
Motivational and demotivational posters can be funny when they're done right, just so happens most of the time they aren't that creative and many utilize already overused-to-death memes (the Portal cake, cheeseburger cats, anything with the word "win" or "fail" in it, etc).

SassySnivy In reply to Neslug [2012-05-17 14:52:11 +0000 UTC]
Basically, yes. But the law can't be applied to certain ones just because they are / aren't funny, sadly.

I back Anti-Art Thieves 100 percent and with that said I would like to ask I was wondering if you had a stamp icon version of this stamp. If not would you mind if someone made one?

No I don't have an icon version, but you can make it one (or technically two) if you want.

this is so true. I 100% support it. screenshots of games are some things the end up on the dA frontpage that do not deserve it. seriously, its a screenshot of a game, its submitted by someone who just draws popular things and bam, front page.

I love this. I came across someone trying to pass off a Naruto screenshot as something they made, and it still had the subtitles on it.
