I wanted to change her hairstyle the first time I saw it. It looked like too much like a reject of Sailor Moon's hairstyle.
The features I like from Mai is her neck. It's so ridiculously long that it's perfect in wearing chinese-collared dresses or turtlenecks. The haori actually covers most of Mai's sitting position which kinda throws the eye off the anatomy. I drew her figure on top of the haori to double check, and I was just being paranoid. I would love to have one of those, but I'll just have to settle for my thick blankets.
And I bear no ill-will towards Mai. I just happen to like Zutara more. Like, Zutara >>> Mai.

Mai looks so sad! And yet very indifferent at the same time... I really like her hair in this, I think it suits the changes that you're making with 'Maiden Voyage' and really fits with the scene here. The knife she's holding is really cool too! I like the rose design embedded in the handle! And the textures are really popping too!

I love the way her hair looks when untied. And her expression really matches the mood and depth of the color theme red all around her. The knife design is very well drawn. She really looks like Suzaku, one of my Avatar OCs characters. She's the Warrior of Fire...you can find her in my Avatar folder in my gallery. My first drawing of her isn't that good though. I wished that I can draw as accurate and well as you.

She looks so much cooler without that crazy hairstyle!!! I definitely love your version of Mai more than the original! But I have to agree, I love Zutara way more than I like Mai. Don't really like Mai that much, she needs more personality for me...
Anyway, this is a very beautiful picture. The one thing I have to say is that it looks almost like she's about to stick the dagger up her nose. O_O Or maybe it's just me... Awesome picture anyway!

Actually... I think I stumbled upon why she had the hair like that...
"In China, the hairstyle is known as "ox horns". It was a commonly used hairstyle up until the early 20th century, and can still be seen today when traditional attire is used. I've always been kind of iffy about Mai. My friends and I didn't like her because we thought she was too stereotypical. -.- Sometimes I liked her for being sarcastically funny, and sometimes I hated her for ignoring Zuko's problems. But I've kind of come to peace with her character and this picture describes how I think of her. Love it!

I never really like Mai from the start, which is odd because I feel that--personality wise-- we are very alike, but she actually looks really cool in your picture. The way she is just staring out into the distance with that dagger is chilling. She has very eerie sense of beauty, and it fits her perfectly. I also really like how she actually looks like Mai despite her hairstyle change--most people draw her (in my opinion) way too beautiful or simply much too man-ish. Wonderful job~

I share your oppinion on the whole Zutara - Mai thing. I really do like her. She is a great character and a very strong person. In spite of it all, I still ship Zutara before everything else
