Sierra NevadaGeocontrol + Vue
23+ Billion Polygons and an 80+ Hr render. Luckily Vue has the ability to resume renders (although it did mess up my indirect lightning). I took probably a couple of hours to setup the scene, until I started doing some renders. It was worth the wait!
I painted the ecosystem (which was pretty fun). What took the longest, besides the render, was probably getting the right distance with the camera to get a "realistic" shot.
Onto the next project!

Very cool image. I'm not so keen on the clouds. The fractal patterns are very well visible at the edges. Also, the tree-distribution mid-ground could be a bit more dense. However, the rest of the image is well balanced. Great point of view and nice texturing.
That GC2 terrain is awesome!
I'd like to reproduce this image in Terragen 2. How would you like that idea?

Truly a great piece. It always refreshing to see great Vue work like this among the multitude of "not-so-great" Vue work.
A suggestion (though this is just me), would be to use Onyx Tree's with alpha mapped leaves for the two trees in the foreground. It is hard to get realistic leaves up close in Vue, but Onyxtree seems to produce great results (with a little practice).
This way if you do a higher resolution render, you could really get some great detail in the trees in the foreground. Though I suppose this could easily be solved in Vue with a bit of DoF.
I'm glad you didn't try to make it fancy either. Often artists will add in things that may look cool, but distract from the overall picture.

Thanks for your kind comments! and I agree. I'm not a big fan of Vue's upclose textures for the trees and plants... so I'm definitely gonna check out Onyx Trees!

I really wish Vue could do terrains like that directly in the terrain editor, you would never see a lone mountain this realistic without GeoControl or WorldMachine's influence

Yup. I hope e-on improves on the terrain sculpting.... although maybe you can, who knows!
To me it doesn't really matter what tool is used. As long as a pleasant image is achieved, it's all good
