It wasn’t supposed to end this way.

I’ve been held at gunpoint more times than I care to remember, and I’ve killed many people in my life, those who stood between me and my goal, be it an artifact or something as simple as survival. But I’d never in my worst nightmares thought I’d be held at gunpoint and be forced to do the same to the man I loved…

Kurtis was staring at me, silent. His cobalt eyes were narrowed in real fear, chest rising and falling faster than normal as he struggled to hold back his panic. A gloved hand yanked on my own, opening my fingers and closing them back over the butt of a pistol before positioning it against Kurtis’ temple. He winced at the same time the other figure moved away, training a rifle on my head, I was sure. My gaze flickered all over his face, unaware that I was nearly gasping at the adrenaline high as the icy metal of a gun was shoved into the back of my head.

“Breathe, Lara, calm down.” Kurtis whispered to me, trying to quell the rising sense of terror in us both, realizing that no matter how we tried to escape, one or both of us was going to die. He gave me a weak half-smile, reluctantly encouraging. I felt myself shake my head almost imperceptibly, the gun at the back of my head pressing more insistently. Kurtis stifled a grunt as the gun whacked at his fingers as he curled them around my head, pulling me in for a bruising, desperate kiss. I threw my other arm around his neck, nearly losing my grip on the gun in my hand, and someone moved in quickly to shove my hand back against his temple. I pulled away with a sobbing gasp, eyes stinging as my vision went blurry with tears.

“Hurry up, Croft. Either you shoot him nice and simple, or we fill you both with lead.” I’d heard those words thousands of times, but what frightened me most was the taste of resignation on Kurtis’ lips. His mouth curved into the barest hint of a sad smile. Kurtis’ brilliant sapphire eyes closed just as I caught a glimpse of moisture welling at the corners of his eyes. I let out a soft cry in protest, but he leaned in and whispered against my lips in a faint kiss.

“I love you, Lara Croft.” The admission stunned me into momentary paralysis, and the tears I’d tried to hold back began to slide down my cheeks.

“Kurtis-”

“Count to three then… just do it.” The anguish in his voice made my heart clench, and I heard the click of a trigger being pulled behind my head at the same time his lips parted against mine.

“One… two…”

I had to tell him.

“I love you, Kurtis Trent.” Despite our situation, he paused and genuinely smiled.

“…Three.”
