Description I'd normally put this in scaps (I did, acutally) but I'm pretty pleased with this sketch of the Cactacae race from China Mieville's. I am so in love with those books and this race in particular...I just thought I'd make this available for the general public who don't check my scraps (since I know there's a small cadre of Mieville fans out there!). I was pretty bummed by the recent article in Dragon (it's character illustrations, anyways) and my obsession was refueled (as it periodically is) to hit the books again and reassert my own interpretations. If China's out there somewhere! PICK ME! I love you, man...I want to Illustrate for you!

Er...*cough*...anyways...this is a cactus-man's head. Yeah.

China Mieville/Bas-Lag fan? go check out my scraps, they're primarily Bas-Lag related: [link]

Outstanding work! Rough, prickly, and full of movement. I love China MiΓ©ville's books so much, and you did justice.

(I'm more than halfway through Perdido Street Station at the moment, and it's outrageous!)

What I'm really loving bout this is your lines shading. Very exact and strong.β™₯ It makes grace to the excellent spacial perception in your overall style.
Also seen in the older Werewolf Attack pic in your gallery.
It's a cool technique to have.

Hey! I'm glad you like the hatching...It can get a little overwhelming at times, which is why I try and take it easy when I can help it. But it's nice to hear someone likes it...even that nasty werewolf pic I'm honored to have you around my gallery at all, actually! I really like your work!

Thanks to you too for swinging by my place.β™₯
Hatching is love. highly underrated IMO. I personally find rough sketches and lines like this more characteristical than finished stuff, cause you can almost see what the artists was thinking while doing it.

It looks not only how Meiville describes the cactus-men, but like a real person. The style is also a good match for the tone of the book---sort of olde-fashionde, but detailed.
I admit I was never crazy about Perdido Street Station, but I still love this picture.

This is a really good interpretation of the character. I have only read a little, but it's very nice.

Why don't you write to him!? If I was him and saw how amazingly you drew his work, I'd pick you up in a New Crobuzon minute!!! I love how you manage to draw the same way I kinda see the characters- as it's sort of hard at times to visualise what they all look like- especially some of the Remade.
Still, I wrote off to an author I really admired and he sent me back a quote that got put on the back of my first novel. I was so amazed. So give it a go! I mean, you have nothing to lose! You may even end up as the new Paul Kidby (except for CM rather than TP lol) You certainly have the talent!
