Description
I'm applying for an Art Internship at Insomniac Games[link]
They asked for two characters one human, one alien, both original designs but set in their 'Resistance: FOM' universe. So, here's my alien (Chimera) soldier!
This isn't really the sort of thing I like to do. But with good there's evil and the nastier the evil the more heroic the hero, right? Anyways...still, I'm not a huge fan of grotesque alien monsters these days.
Nevertheless, here he is...a partially formed behemoth leeching the biomass of several human victims.
The pressure is on and the American forces have pressed into Chimeran territory, forcing the Chimera to rush their incomplete monstrosities into the fray. Still weak and unable to support itself without mechanical assistance, he's very, very cranky.
Enjoy if you've the stomach for it!

Oh wow- this was a looonnng time ago!
I did get the internship, or at least- they offered it to me, and I turned it down because I kind of applied under the impression I would be working on Ratchet and Clank stuff, but they wanted me on Resistance and after doing these I realized...I kind of hate Resistance along with most hardcore FPS's and didn't want to spend a summer drawing things I really hated :/

Yeah, wow. The Ratchet and Clank concept art was always my favourite. Good job!

hahaha- not so hard, actually. It's a lot easier to design ugly things than to design attractive ones.

Haha, I'm just the opposite. All about the grotesque alien monsters. Still, you clearly excel at both, this guy is delightfully nasty. Good luck with the internship!

If you get accepted and your concepts turned into characters....
...then we're gonna see a lot of badassery in Resistance 3

Nice work! I dig the design. I just submitted the work I did for one of their art tests too but I got so rushed in the end that my designs, for the alien especially, came out poor. Have yet to hear back from them but guessing I didn't get the job. I recently posted the results if you wanna check em out. Keep up the grand work!

Hey, thanks! I checked out your work and you did a pretty sweet job, yourself! I know that the deadline can be rough as well...I suppose the only gave you a week or two as well, eh? I thought your alien looked stronger than the human, actually...he's pretty neat! And don't sell yourself short just yet...I'm sure you have a shot! Best of luck, man!

Word, thanks man. Yeah they gave me a week but I was already running on burn-out mode from crunch time at the studio I'm currently with plus freelance...it wasn't fun. I ended up puting most of the time into the environment and finished the characters up during a trip I had to take out of town. Blah! Thanks for the encouragement though.

Ha! Yeah, I did...and I turned it down. In the end I just had no peace about the thing...aliens and guns and all. But it was a great learning experience!

Good on you. It's one of the oldest lessons out there: get good at something you really don't enjoy and WHAM, guess what you'll be doing all the time? The thing you don't dig but are good at doing.
Stick to your guns, and pursue the things you most want to do. Compromise only where you must. You're on the right road.

Wow! Well, that's mighty encouraging to hear! Funnily enough, I don't hear that often...I mean, I kind of figured it out, but mostly people seem to lean in the "get the money NOW" direction when dispensing advice I really appreciate it, man!

There will be times when you will have to do stuff that's not so yummy. When you start out, it's called "paying your dues". Grunt work. All of us have done shovelfulls of the stuff, I promise you. You just wade through it and remember that you don't have to stay there, any more than you have to stay at Barnes & Nobles, unless you want to. Some folks do really well at texturing and do their own work on the side. That may work for you, that or something like it. BUT...a big, bloated important BUT...if you spend too much time chasing money, you WILL eventually lose your soul. The passion will go. You may still be cranking out good work, but you'll have stopped growing. You'll have stopped dreaming.
Remember: you are a RESOURCE, not a cog. The corporate world wants you to think of yourself as a cog, replaceable, without inherent value, and even parasitical. I've heard Suits tell us "you wouldn't have your skills if it weren't for the job". Not all corporations follow the line, but most do. Consider yourself a resource.
Don't let yourself get tapped out.

Agh, honestly I don't like it, I've never had stomach for this kind of things.
Really well designed mechanical parts, they do really look that they could be moving, and I think that they pretty match the monster's color.
I was going to ask... wht that improved version of your avatar on the top right side? (you seem to really succed at drawing lobtsers, btw)

Well, me neither, honestly...it's not the sort of thing I'm really excited about. And I'm sorry to have disappointed my biggest fan!
That is, as you have observed, an updated version of my avatar...I've been using it as a sort of logo stamped on all my resume and portfolio material.
Glad you like it!

Take your time with the comics, I hope you enjoyed them!
And if you *must* lend me the novel, then I shall have to oblige you, won't I?
Maybe if you decide to *cough* show up on campus again *cough* then we can catch up
