Description
This week's Character Creation assignment! Design two characters; one embodying your worst trait, and one embodying your best. I suppose you can probably guess that this is a worst-trait kinda sitch-ee-ation. I saw it as an opportunity to be a little uncomfortably honest and get this out there. I feel like the more thoroughly I bring this sort of thing into the light, the more thoroughly I put it to death. So here it is: Lust.Fun, huh?
I think it's important to say, for those who'll hear; through faith in Christ I have been given victory over this thing. As a result, I don't see this is a dirty or pessimistic piece (and I'm certainly not setting out to offend anyone)...I just thought I should be honest. It's a discussion (artistically) I've been wanting to have, since it has been one of the principal themes of my life. It's just important to me to call sin "sin".
And hey, look: hope!
That said, here's the character design! Hope you guys can appreciate it

I don't get how this represents Lust. I have my own views about what the seven sins would look like
* Superbia-???
* Avaritia-A kind of cybernetic goblin who's weak, atrophied body is maintained by golden prosthetic implants
* Luxuria-A mass of eyes, mouths and ears on a body of snakes and arms
* Invidia-A reflective humanoid
* Gula-A skeleton who's "flesh" is composed of locusts
* Ira-A mass of violent, whipping muscles with sharp weapons embedded in it
* Acedia-Some hollow cape of skin, jutting out from the ground in a body horror fashion

Holy cow! As I read through your description of Mercy, I thought to myself "that seems like a very Christ-like trait to admire". Then I saw this piece and continued to wonder...and then I read the description. It put a big smile on my face.
Hard to add this one to my favorites, but I did so because I can identify. It grosses me out and is grotesque...but that's kinda the point. The slavering mouth; the hundred eyes; the grasping, clawing hands; the extended (and yet weak?), grasping "member". Well done, sir.

I had to fave this, not only because of the intense embodiment had me taken aback, the seeming astounding accuracy of how this should be represented, but also what you had to say. I was second guessing it but your comments sealed the deal. Really amazing piece.

Awesome job! And love your description...I'm also a Christian and struggle with the same vice, lol. The first way to work at overcoming a weakness is to stop denying it, to properly face it. It's really tough trying to balance out what the body wants and what's best for the spirit, that's for sure. Great job with the character too, very creative!

Ha! Well...that's a scathing review, if ever there was one.
I have to say, I have a hard time swallowing kind words about my work after an assualt on my faith like that, and I am compelled to retort:
In no way do I feel confined by the edicts against Lust that Christ espouses. I am not ashamed to be human; I am pleased to be made in the image of God, and he was pleased to make man. That's a colossal misconception about the Christian outlook.
There is a profound difference between Lust and Love.
Physical desire can play into either of those paradigms, but one is clearly the nobler and more beautiful way.
Lust is selfish, thinks only of one's personal pleasure, and can satisfy it's desires with or without another person's presence or consent.
Love is for others, it is generous and seeks to give pleasure rather than to receive it, clutch it, keep it for it's own, and ultimately sour and destroy it.
I am ashamed to be broken, and that I am flawed. We all are, when we can see there is a better way and cannot live up to that standard. I think it's really very simple, and in no way does that mean that I oppose the propogation of the species. Sex is beautiful and God encourages it! I just think the place for 'propogation' (which, to me is a colossal reduction of the meaning of sex) at its absolute best is under the union of two people united by love, not lust.
I'd love to talk further with you, and please: less hate here, next time.

I have nothing but respect for your artistic talent.
The sentiment however that you are "broken", "flawed"
and that you need to be ashamed of this are all great
examples of the damage that the cult of Christianity
does to people.
Because your god puts up a standard that you "cannot live up to"
and then sends you to hell for it if you do not debase yourself
by admitting that you are broken and flawed and nothing without him,
then I have to deduce that he is himself a monster.

There is no shame in being flawed. We are human and that is in our nature. That is why god sent his only begotten son to earth to die for our sins.

You've skipped over the entire discussion about lust and Love, and focused immediately on what I said about being "flawed". Do you dispute that you understand the concept of Love as seperate from that of lust? If you can see how they are different, and how one is opposite to and clearly better than the other, then you have already acknowledged a standard by which a man may be called 'flawed'.
My point being: Selfishness is worse than Selflessness. Lust is ultimately vicious selfishness, and deserves to be characterized as evil. Is that still disagreeable to you?
And please don't say you 'respect my talent'. I did nothing to get it by myself, and it deserves your respect not a bit more than my beliefs do. And you evidently have no respect for them, so please: don't treat my 'talent' as different. I don't mean that combatively.

I feel bad intruding on this conversation, but I just want to say that I respect the way you defended your faith. Though I myself am not religious in any way, I have overwhelming amounts of respect for the way you are able to defend your beliefs without insulting or claiming that your opinion is the only valid one.

Your worst trait is lust? I would think that there would be thousands of other dark things lurking in the minds of all humanity much worse than the want to have sex. Though I suppose everything in great amounts can be bad, eh?
Either way, the concept behind it is really great. You did an amazing job at putting it together, colors and character design, and all. Fitting mood.

Well...it depends on your outlook, I suppose. I'm a Christian and Christ teaches that the act of lust outside of marriage is essentially the spiritual equivalent to adultery. In which case, yeah: lust would be pretty bad. And when you're engaged in fighting against something that most of the world considers to be "perfectly natural", then there aren't many people who are going to take your side on the matter. So I'm hardly suprised, but at least realize we may be coming from different points of view on this.

I too, am a christian struggling with lust, except I'm a female. It makes me feel better to see a man willing to admit his weakness in this matter, especially since I sometimes struggle with what my mind minsconstrues as men 'getting away' with sexual sins in the bible. I do feel people don't understand he concept of lust. Lust is the desire for someone without regards to their desire or well being. Lust is a union of pride and envy, born and often leading to those two other vices. I love the form of this creature, the eyes are small and almost insectile, giving them a cold,unemotional distance, perhaps symbolizing how people who lust after others often see them as 'things?' The pig is symbolic of greed and gluttony, Lust desire to sate its own hunger without regard to anything but fulfilling its need. One thing that struck me was the pan flute hanging around the beasts neck, it produces a sweet, natural sound, perhaps an emblem of the justifications of 'biology' and 'nature' Sex was made for love. Sex without love is spawned from lust. Sex isn't a sin, God's first command was for adam and eve to 'be fruitful' I wish people understood that christianity has nothing against sex, just sex for the wrong reasons.

Oh no, I realize.
Myself, I am agnostic. So to me calling sex a sin is just odd and unnatural. Even primal lust has something raw and pure about it, though I myself don't believe in sex for the sake of sex, as most people seem to. There is always a deeper psychological need behind it.
I'm not arguing your belief, you are free to think and feel as you please, and I respect that, and certainly respect your ability to put into art that feeling. I'm just saying that in a world as screwed up as this, there are a million more atrocious things one could do.

Well, fair enough. And just to clarify...It's not sex that is seen as a sin, by any means...it's just the context of that sex that is the issue at hand. In Christianity, it's within marriage that sex is to be enjoyed as a blessing and nothing to be ashamed of. It's the "extramarital" portion of the equation that's out of the question. It's not an issue of whether it's natural or not, it's just an issue of committment and monogamy. It's that "deeper need" you mention being held up as the thing of most importance, and a thing to be submitted to God instead of sought out for it's own sake. But I think we understand eachother. This is absolutely and incredibly poignant. Just wow. All the symbolism (and I guarantee I'm not seeing all of it). The multitude of eyes and eyes on a long creepy tongue, the crotch-hand, the multitude of hands, he's a pig, but he's also got goat feet/pan pipe (bachus). Every time I look at this again it astounds me. So very good. And so very difficult of a topic to discuss, especially in today's culture. God bless.

Dude, this is amazing!!! i love it. a very, very interesting manifestation of "Lust"...i'm inspired to draw up my worst and best traits in physical form!
Again, like many people here have said...i think it's pretty normal to be lustful during your early 20s. i just turned 20 back in April, so think of what i have to look forward to!
