Description This week's Character Creation assignment! Design two characters; one embodying your worst trait, and one embodying your best. I suppose you can probably guess that this is a worst-trait kinda sitch-ee-ation. I saw it as an opportunity to be a little uncomfortably honest and get this out there. I feel like the more thoroughly I bring this sort of thing into the light, the more thoroughly I put it to death. So here it is: Lust.
Fun, huh?
I think it's important to say, for those who'll hear; through faith in Christ I have been given victory over this thing. As a result, I don't see this is a dirty or pessimistic piece (and I'm certainly not setting out to offend anyone)...I just thought I should be honest. It's a discussion (artistically) I've been wanting to have, since it has been one of the principal themes of my life. It's just important to me to call sin "sin".
And hey, look: hope!
That said, here's the character design! Hope you guys can appreciate it

I'm taking off the parental warning...but let me know if y'all think I should put it back on!

Thanks so much for making this piece. Even Christian girls need to gain a victory over this thing, and you're so right about 'just because it's normal doesn't mean it's okay'.
It's something I keep trying to teach my Jr. High youth group, although I probably won't be showing them this piece anytime soon. lol

Heheheh...well, I'm really glad you appreciate it. Right on with your Jr. High group...the more people can speak about this stuff unafraid and unembarrassed, the better I think! God bless!

Nice work man! Totally know what you're talking about with your struggle with lust. It's one of my main problem areas too. Praise the Lord that you're fighting for victory!

i really respect your handle of color theory and your ability to color things with such high contrasts of light and dark. i struggle with these things and i have a lot of your art saved to my computer for reference when i'm wrestling with my own color work.

and hey, that's a pretty badass lust demon thing.

Thanks! I've really been trying to make sure I watch that value is being dealt with as well as color...I have a tendency to prefer just juicy colors without really thinking about value structures in the piece, but it's so much improved when I do!

this is a spectacular design. i've never thought of lust as a bad thing (and if it is i'm screwed) but i can't deny the genius of how you've portrayed it.

nicholaskole In reply to toerning [2008-09-27 20:02:49 +0000 UTC]

Well, thanks!
In terms of thinking about lust, I'd refer to an earlier comment...I'm talking about 'lust' as opposed to Love. I think people have an intuitive understanding of the difference, but if Love is the ultimate selflessness, then lust in utterly selfish. So I felt I wanted to tackle it as honestly as possible: objectifying, self-consuming, beastial, and insatiable.
I think beyond any religious connotations, that's pretty clearly in the "bad" category, no?

oh no! now is not the moment for a theological debate haha. I suppose I just don't see things that cut and paste. To each his own, though, and i respect your conviction.

lol, parental warning? i dont see why.
I really like the hips part and torso.
Maybe the "bottom hand " is too graphic for me. uhhgasjdhg xD; Just not my personal tase, thats all. And its really interesting how the focus of the figure is all drawn to that spot, specially color wise.
The face is very well done and kinda cute, even. ...untill all those eyes that gross it up. but im sure that was the intention. :B;;;;

kudos.

nicholaskole In reply to BlueBerserker [2008-09-27 20:05:53 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, well...the "crotcharm" wasn't really supposed to be pleasant. But it is kind of the thesis of the design, you know? He was never intended for cuteness
Thanks, though!

BlueBerserker In reply to nicholaskole [2008-09-27 21:03:47 +0000 UTC]

I see. :0
Well, It wasn't "cute" cute- but more like the eyes(upper) and for the structure of the face evoked an air of cuteness. ...or maybe i like pig-esque things.
still, the other set of eyes cuts that off. (:

oh wow this is so great. i looked at this for about ten minutes before getting to the description; it was already amazing but then i read that it was the embodiment of Lust (go me for somehow skipping over the title) i had to go back and stare at it for another ten. i couldn't have come up with a better character concept for lust; fucking awesome work!!

This is some really great stuff. Reminds me of something Guillermo Del Toro would do in a film. I love the lines, and the colours, and I dont think you need to put the parental warning on.

tsau-mia [2008-09-27 08:46:40 +0000 UTC]

That certainly is... interesting.

At least that's what I thought when I first looked at it. Then I read the description, and that made it all the more interesting. You know, I've seen "worse" (content and rating wise) stuff than this in galleries. This is a very interesting way to depict lust, and I praise you for getting victory over it.
I used to have too much lust, and I was doing things I probably shouldn't have done, but I've overcome that. When I found out my fiance had the same problem, we decided to tackle the mountain together, and now with a lot of leaning on one another and leaning on God, we've made it through.
Congratulations to you for overcoming your sin, and for making an amazing piece to share with us!

Hey, don't praise me! A technicality, but REALLY important. I wouldn't take any credit for it and it is only through Christ that it is the least bit possible. But thank you so much for your comment! Your story is especially encouraging and good to hear...it's amazing, once you open up about this sort of thing, how many people have the same sort of experience! And thankfully in God there's no condemnation or judgement! Thanks for sharing, and congratulations right back at you both!

Fareons In reply to ??? [2008-09-27 07:58:53 +0000 UTC]

Wow, I love the symbolism in here.
The pan's flute and the pan's legs (he was half goat, wasn't he?)
And, as always, I have to say that this is an amazing use of lines, and colors. Dark blue and red fit in there just so perfectly!
Btw, I'm kind of curious; does all those eyes have a meaning too? And the boar head too? Or you did add those just for the sake of monsterness?
And as said the guy above me, don't worry about the lust thing that much.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

nicholaskole In reply to Fareons [2008-09-27 09:01:54 +0000 UTC]

It's cool to see you're picking up on the imagery here. The boar's head was chosen for mosntrosu beast qualities...as well as the slobbering pig/male chauvinism connotations. The eyes, since it is lust, are significant (I think for obvious reasons). Particularly that they wrap around into the mouth so that whatever is devoured can be observed. It's also a "devouring of the eyes" in a way, you know? So there you have it.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Fareons In reply to nicholaskole [2008-09-27 09:41:56 +0000 UTC]

Ok, that's what I call a nice idea "devoring with the eyes". I'm telling you it's really well ilustrated, now.

CrystallineEssence [2008-09-27 05:27:51 +0000 UTC]

This is a pretty crazy representation of lust, I actually really like it.

And just between you and me (and the rest of the DA community I guess that's gonna read this comment), it's normal at 21 to be filled with lust; in fact, if you weren't, you'd have something hormonally wrong with you. Of course you know your situation better than me, but don't be too hard on yourself, as long as you have a good head on your shoulders you aren't hurting anyone.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

nicholaskole In reply to CrystallineEssence [2008-09-27 09:08:57 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, I appreciate your feedback!
I guess that my viewpoint is that just because something is "normal" doesn't make it right or OK. Admittedly I have pretty radical views on lust, and that comes with my personal faith. I realize that there are hormones at work, and I'm not making an anti-sex statement. Those hormones are good and healthy, but need to be mastered and put in their place. Much like I believe sex is for marriage, I believe lust has no place in the picture. I'm talking about lust as opposite and at war with love; Lust as selfish, self-seeking, obsessive, and bestial. I'd say, from my personal experience, that when you let those things reign in your body then you are hurting everyone!

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

CrystallineEssence In reply to nicholaskole [2008-09-29 17:24:08 +0000 UTC]

Touche! I just didn't want you to develop any sort of self-hate or self-loathing or get a negative self-image, those things may not hurt others but they are definitely hurting yourself. If you are contrasting lust as the opposite of love, then I am definitely with you, it is something that should be reigned in and controlled. But in my humble opinion (and from my weighty experience): in relationships, pure love with no lust is not truly love at all, at least not in the romantic sense of the word. (And I am not trying to say that is the only form of love, just that in relationships, lust is definitely a tool for the better if one knows how to use it.)

And don't worry, I love God and I respect other people's beliefs, I just wanted to make sure you weren't being too hard on yourself.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

nicholaskole In reply to CrystallineEssence [2008-10-01 16:34:26 +0000 UTC]

I hear you on the self-hate thing...but the assignment was to find a negative trait, and I think it's healthy to know what a douche you are if and when you are a douche. And that said, self-image is not really one of my problems
I *think* I understand what you're getting at in regards to relationships...but I have my own convictions in that regard. I believe sex is for marriage, and lust (if ever allowable...and again, I'm not talking about sexual desire...lust is the perversion and corruption of sexual desire, which objectifies the desired) is something that should be forgone along with outright sex. It was taught in the old Jewish law that to commit adultery as a sin, but Jesus explicitly states that "even if you look at a woman lustfully, you are committing adultery with her in your heart". So, in a way it's a word-game...but really it comes down to the heart on a very basic level.
How's this: I promise not to be too hard on myself if you promise not to be too easy on yourself?

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

CrystallineEssence In reply to nicholaskole [2008-10-01 21:43:11 +0000 UTC]

Ooo see I think we see lust as different things, you see it as a difference between "sexual desire" and "lust" whereas I see them as the same thing. In that case, I agree with you, I can see how you got a skewed view of me too haha. I'm not "easy on myself" in that regard at all. What I was trying to say was that "sexual desire" should be in romantic relationships, and that's how I interpreted your picture, that you saw sexual desire as being evil which I was trying to say was not, lol. I hope that makes sense. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

It's a really scary creature concept... freaky really. When I read your description though it swapped over entirely. Not that it became any prettier ^__^ it just became a very visual representation. For you to say you've had victory over something like that is fantastic. I'm amazed at your honesty. Keep it up!

And victory is not something I really deserve to be congratulated about (credit where credit is due...there is no victory without Christ) but thanks a lot for your comment!
