First of all, the birds being the opening panel with the sword dropping to the ground as a follow up for the first page was something I did not request but you added, and it's SO PERFECT? Just looking at these two pictures alone really gives the viewer an idea of what's going on in the scene before even looking further down the page, and that's awesome!! The lighting is so vibrant and warm, there's no way it's a serious fighting scene-- I love that little choice you made ;u;
And onto the characters. Right away with this wip I really appreciated the size difference you captured between the two of them - often times people seem to think Coal is larger than he is but really he's just a teeny tiny boy who apparently, swings a sword like a bat. Adorable. Spirit is also so handsome in your style?? He looks super huggable and very broad-shouldered/barrel-chested which is PERFECT for him!! Soft!

That stance he's using looks more suited for a great sword but I'm not 100% sure

Historical martial artist here. The stance you see is a sloppy version of a guard position that is being used in both longsword and in great sword fighting. It's called "hut vom tag" in the German tradition, and it is a default stance.
A cleaner and more effective version of this guard position would involve re-orineting the upper body so that it faces towards the opponent and pointing the crossguard towards the target, so that the blade is in a position to cut the opponent with a straight forward swing.
Alternatively, the guy could also lean back as if he were to charge his strike, which is a stance called "Zornhut," but this is more of a niche technique. Here's how it's depicted in a historical manual: grauenwolf.files.wordpress.com…

This comic's layout is seriously the neatest thing like I love the way you overlapped the panels onto one main image- it just looks really pleasing?? It feels really dynamic and easy to follow/read hhghgh. I literally know very little of how making a comic goes but I thought that was really cool. AND AGAIN how long does it take you to do these backgrounds jkdsgfdhkg???
