how about attaching the ears to the hat base?

nikkiswimmer In reply to CamaroLuver15 [2013-03-19 03:21:01 +0000 UTC]
Yes, definitely sew the ears into the actual seam of the hat. Thank you for pointing that out! Unfortunately, I made this tutorial about five years ago when I wasn't so knowledgeable about sewing... Maybe it's time I made an update to this tutorial.
Happy sewing!

when i made my very first one (if you'd like you can see here [link] ) i started to sew the hat base, then stumbled a bit when i realized the ears probably need to be on the inside of the base seam, not the outside. however when i made the second and third attempts, i remembered to sew the ears on the inside of the base seam.

That's so cute---thanks for making a tutorial ^_^
But I have a question--was the "hot pocket" part supposed to be used as a stuffer for the ear, or were you just demonstrating the part about making pointed tips when turning stuff inside-out?

hazardbaby In reply to kyut530 [2010-12-06 17:45:12 +0000 UTC]
It was just a sample demonstration. You can stuff the ear with whatever cheap stuffing you find at the local fabric store.
Glad you enjoyed it, and happy sewing!

Ah, thank you for the tutorial!
I'll be sure to use this one, but for a Pichu hat.
Which is actually not much of a difference. c:

this is amazing, I'm having a bit of trouble with the black tips on the ears / how to get the white part on the eyes perfect but I guess a lot of patience would be handy

hazardbaby In reply to megaanscott [2010-12-06 17:48:30 +0000 UTC]
What problems did you have with the black tips?
Also, I whip-stitched the white part on the eyes, as I did for all other decorations on the hat. Just take it nice and slow, keep your seam-ripper handy.
Happy sewing!

Thanks for the help. I thought about just putting the ears in normally but they were too heavy for the base hat. The whipstitch does wonders~

Aw, sorry to hear! You can always cruise your local thrift store for cheap machines and fabric. Last I checked, Wal*Mart has a few for under $50. To be honest, the machine I use is my mother's, and it's over 30 years old!!! I need an upgrade, too...
Happy sewing!
