Description I had some pretty bad photos with some pretty neat dolphin poses in them, which I thought may be nice for references. I made this for myself as the poses may come in handy when I do my comic, but I figured I would share as well in case they came in handy for anyone else.

No need to credit if you reference a pose from here. The poses would work fairly well if you were drawing orcas, too.

The cutting out isn't great because it was pretty time consuming, and this is for pose references, not photo manipulations

Oh wow - THESE THINGS

In my usual attempt to keep up with the year-old deviations in my inbox that DA otherwise throws out, I came across these again Man, they are so great, and I have no doubt that they have been and will be sooo handy for a lot of cetacean artists out there. Getting some good, decent full body dolphin shots in one place together is rare. Also props to you for cutting them all out, I don't think I'd have the patience for that :0 (I'd just cut them all out like you did the faces haha)

Oh and I do have to say thank you - as well as ask a question. First the thank you: it's in part because of these photo sets by you that I decided to compile my own dolphins photos for reference as well, putting them all together so I can hopefully find some good refs when I need them. Which is awesome, and helpful, and feels so much better than just throwing away most of them because they're not pretty pictures.

Now for the question: my folder for Common bottlenose dolphins currently holds a little over 8000 photos (10.5 thousand of you count all cetaceans)... Which means that even with my endless folders, subfolders and sub-subfolders, I still end up with pretty big groups (185 close ups of dolphin eyes, anyone?). For the heads and bodies I've tried sorting them by angle as well, but it's a super tricky job. Like, what do you do with half bodies? Or dolphins that are twisted and thus seen from two different angles at the same time? All that jazz. So uh, my question for you: how do you keep these ref photos sorted? Or are these more or less all you have and do you just keep it small and accessible like any sane person?

You have so many photos!
I didn't want to throw away my bad photos either particularly because I knew they could be useful!

These are basically the extent of most of my dolphin photos (full body at least), which is why I even bothered cutting them out XD. I don't have too many, particularly full body photos as my local SW doesn't have any underwater viewing, and I haven't been very frequently. My stash is low!

Your collection sounds wonderful though 0_0. All your photos or just references you have found through the internet?
If they are your photos, perhaps an option could be to make a website or Flickr account. A website would probably be better, but Flickr is free, so
In Flickr you have the option to create albums. There you could filter your photos like you have already such as 'eyes', 'full body' etc for easy viewing. But, Flickr also has a pretty powerful Tag function as well, and you can search for tags in your own photos.

For example, you could want to search for a photo that is full body, showing the belly at a 3/4 angle... You could tag all photos that fit that description with *Body *Belly *3/4
Then all related photos will show up. I just quickly tested on my own Flickr and it works pretty well if you get the tags working properly. Maybe make a 'guide' for yourself so you remember what tags you have used. You can batch edit tags as well which makes the process very quick. You could have tags that specify the species, the age, the angle, the behavior, pose, mouth position (open/close)... You could get pretty specific.
You can also make your photos set to private or password access on Flickr if you didn't want everyone to see them.

ACTUALLY you might be able to do something similar to the photos on your computer. You can add tags by right clicking photos and going to properties, and you can search for tags in the photo folders. I quickly tested it and it might work just as well as the Flickr tag system.
Looks like you can also select multiple photos to add tags to as well like a batch edit! It also searches the tags through multiple folders.

This will be awesome if you have collections of photos that are not yours. In fact, I think I might try something like this to create my own reference stash.   Thank you for indirectly giving me this idea! XD

I do! It's really nice and really horrible at the same time XD

Ah, okay, that does make sense. If you have only a few it does look a lot nicer to just cut them out. You should go to your local SW again and take some more photos! The ones you show on here are always so gorgeous, and it means more refs for you

Yes, all of those photos are mine I keep ref photos of basically everything I photograph, but because of my usual drawing subject (and the sheer amount of pictures) the dolphins are the only ones I'm sorting so meticulously. Bottlenose dolphins actually make up almost one fourth of all my ref pictures haha. On that note, I do have collections of internet-found photos but they're either more for artistic inspiration, or specifically for species and local varieties etc (for my scientific illustrations). It'd be pretty neat to be able to search those as well for species-specific pose references, but it's a bit tough, especially since they are primarily sorted by region. But I know those pics well so I can usually find what I'm looking for.

Anyway, back on topic, your tagging idea is so so great! Thank you so much for that :0 I knew tags were a thing and I sometimes saw them on photos, but honestly I never looked into how they worked. But damn you're right, they're amazingly powerful sorting tools, let me get as specific as I want, and it makes searching for exactly what I need super easy. Just need a list to keep track of what tag means what. I'm really glad it's a computer feature too, since flickr could of course be done, but it would entail uploading all said 8000 photos... and then downloading again when necessary. So I am definitely going to be adding tags to all my photos, and maybe if it works out super well & doesn't take too long I'll try doing it for the internet-found photos of other species too!

Hahaha, we're just giving each other ideas back and forth, awesome

Used here  Sweet Dreams, Ephraim
The road was long, at least, that's how Ephraim remembered it.
On his way home and reaching the bottom of his road where the bucket and slop cloth awaited him the following morning. He let out a sigh.
'That's one for Mom none for me. Again. At least, the bricks are red and the bucket black and the slop cloth a nice shade of grey and smells nice. And at least, home is still here, and at least, dinner will be on the table and mom will tell me to take off my shoes and put on my slippers and hang up my coat where it belongs. And in the sky, the clouds will float on by without exploding on a summers day in a blue sky. At least, I know that the red balls shine and drop into the pockets without a sound on the snooker table and I know I will cry myself to sleep tonight.' thought Ephraim as he took his place at the dinner table.
'How can you eat that meat?' asked his sister of Ephraim.
'I dunno. I just sort of chew and up and down it goes.' said Ephraim withThanks!

Woo! I wish more people would share their photos freely! (throw away photos that are otherwise no good, but great for artists looking for unique poses) Particularly underwater shots. I don't have any of those D:

LE GASP, DOLPHIN POSES! These are awesome for some on hand poses if you don't want to dig around forever looking for a certain image/reference. like me.. I AM A SAD PERSON. 👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nimkish In reply to Viscuit [2015-09-25 08:51:04 +0000 UTC]

Haha, me too! Yeah I like them because they are poses you actually would have to search for because they aren't common ones, which can be annoying and time consuming.  So why not! Wasn't going to do anything else with these photos : D

I'm considering doing the same thing for dolphin faces, as well. I might have enough photos with enough variety and angles to make something decent.

Viscuit In reply to Nimkish [2015-09-26 06:28:03 +0000 UTC]

Welllllllllllllllllllllllll. I wouldn't say they're uncommon, you can find quite a few pictures around. ;'D It depends on what you're looking for. You wouldn't use really an jumping pose for an underwater pose as water and air (NOT THE SAY YOU CAN'T) are 2 different elements and gravity would play a huge factor in how a dolphin would bend!
Like underwater they have some wonky poses: www.scubatravel.co.uk/photos/r… and cdn.c.photoshelter.com/img-get… but they're a lot more weightless and their bodies will be more twisty and twirly. I MEAN IMAGINE LUGGING YOUR
400lb BODY OUT OF THE WATER?

Most out of water poses are quite stiff compared to underwater fluid poses: Like your photo's you can see that the body is quite stiff, aside from when they actually reach the peak of their jump and fall back into the water. That's not to say that they'd pose in the air also but it depends on how they exit the water also. www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHKA5G… mostly when going up their body is quite tight. But then you get the awesome weird ones like: www.pacificwhale.org/sites/pac… and orig01.deviantart.net/b9a5/f/2…
SO YEAH I WOULD BE A BIT CAREFUL WITH POSES AS THEY'RE REALLY ANNOYING AND TRICKY LOL but references are a good thing to have on hand. <:
SORRY I AM LIKE, writing a huge spam I'll stop now. <: lol

Nimkish In reply to Viscuit [2015-09-27 02:27:02 +0000 UTC]

Man if I had underwater photos I totally would have used them instead XD It would have been SOO much better This SeaWorld doesn't have underwater viewing.  I need to write an angry letter about that.

Some poses may be a bit stuff, but it doesn't change their body shape so much that they won't work drawn underwater. People don't share their photos very much, even the 'throw away' photos like most of these. Particularly when we are talking about dolphin and orca photographers. There are a lot out there who have thousands of photos, they just don't openly share. At least people can use these guilt free without being concerned about crediting the photographer XD  That was the point.

I'm considering making one for dolphin faces, too. I'm just not too sure if I have enough variety in angles and such to make it decent enough. We shall see!
