Description
Another speepainting. Related to this one . Ignore the split face - I originally painted her whole face, but then I decided I wanted to try to make her faceless. I'll pick a side, eventually, but rest assured if I go with the faceless idea it won't look like it's melting. Like it does now.
The whole project is about illustrating a subject and its opposite/hidden side/other face. I picked a very basic and familiar theme: Nature as creator and loving mother... and Nature as a destructive force.
My general goal is to create something visually interesting, effective and original even with an unoriginal theme.
Other stuff I have in mind:
- deciding between the faceless half of her head and her more human one. It depends: am I going for something malevolent and furious (human feelings) or rather something without a human "soul", a faceless, nameless force that crushes everything? The human-like face is more relatable and expressive, but is destructive Nature actually "angry"? I like expressivity, but perhaps the faceless woman is closer to my perception of destructive Nature.
- making the focus of the paintings (face and tree) polished and well rendered and then progressively make everything else more painterly and rough, even abstract.
- implementing basic geometric shapes in the more abstract areas - round shapes for the more serene portrait, pointy edges for this one.
I'm very stressed out and tired because of school stuff, my English is probably kind of broken today. I appreciate any kind of feedback

I agree with the faceless idea because I think it would really strike the viewer with how nature acts as a destroyer
It has no soul no care about who gets hurt
Your nature art pieces are amazing!!!!

Thank you so much!
I'll upload the final Destroyer illustration sooner or later - I'm not very happy about it, so I'm considering a remake now I'm done with academy

Thats nice
I think you should upload the piece and if you want to remake it, you should. It would only help you grow as an artist
Sometimes I remake some of my own pieces even though it's extra work but it pays off in the end

You are right
It sure pays off! I have a tendency to keep my stuff to myself until I feel it's "ready" to be shown around. But I really need to overcome this. I'll go ahead and upload the piece, and eventually upload a new improved version later on.

I need to work on showing other people my art before it's finished, too!
I'm just worried that they won't think it's good unless it's done.
But yes It is good to show others so they could help

Exactly!
But sketches and WIPs are often so interesting - they tend to look fresh and rough and it's always nice to have a peek at the creative process. I guess we'll have to get used to this kind of approach

I agree
Well, I hope we both can continue to excel in the art field
I'm gonna start working on new pieces that I've been inspired to do

That's an interesting interpretation. Personally, I like the 'faceless, nameless force', only because nature manages to elude us in spectacular ways despite our extensive research of it. It can be understood, but only just.
Maybe you could find a compromise and keep her features somewhat vague and fuzzy, with only the vaguest human elements? Like sunken in eyes that could just as easily be patches of darkness, or something like that.
The technique on how you painted her eyes is really neat-I like the cracks of light showing through her skin.

Thank you! It's a great suggestion and I am definitely going to look for a compromise - also I showed it to my teacher and he said I shouldn't make it look like Satan unless I want it to be about how mean Nature is. Now I'm convinced the super angry version just doesn't deliver the right message

I think you sort of nailed what you actually find works in a sense. I mean since we are a human audience, I would most likely say something that shows expression and has human visualizations would be beneficial for the audience and yourself. You can relate to it and it causes more alarm when the viewer can react to the expression. However, having a more expressible faceless face perhaps? Could work as well. I mean I already sort of like the idea of them being split so maybe you could paint more of the expressive face and keep a bit of that wispy faceless one on the eyes, or other parts? Also it's a good idea with what you said on detailing the tree. It'll pop it out more which is what you want most likely!
Either way it looks really neat!

Thanks for your insights! I agree, I'm going to find a compromise between the two, hoping I can come up with a good solution. What I really don't want is an overly evil/devilish look, but I'm sure I can explore many "milder" alternatives

I'm alright. I haven't had a lot of time to draw recently though which is a bit of a bummer. Other than that the rest is pretty average though. How about you?

Good :3 At least you're not going through stressful times.
I'm okay, a little tired after yesterday's exam (and three weeks of obsessive workworkwork), but satisfied. I'm going for a trip tomorrow and I really can't wait to go skiing and forget about the existence of graphic tablets and computers
