No, that's a different program. Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop aren't the same.

Awesome tutorial, There is one thing i would change/or add. Step 6, instead of calling them mistakes...i would say more like, if you dont like how it came out

something like that. Its not a mistake, i simply didnt like what i ended up with.

wow.
just wow.
Ok, so I have a powerful computing machine (I built it with the intention of running 3D programs like Maya) and it usually took about 15 seconds to open Photoshop, nothing to scoff at surely.
now it takes less than 3. O-O;
thank you sir.
thank you.

Great tutorial. The only part I disagree with is the upscaling comment: I can't say I'd ever recommend up-scaling to 300 from 72 any portion of a piece you intend to leave viewable.

A rough sketch you'll paint over completely, sure, upscale away -- but if you leave the upscaled portion viewable, you'll end up with some bad jaggies and blurry junk, especially if you print.

(I'm sure you know this, but I'm not sure all your readers would.)

Norke In reply to greyorm [2008-08-01 23:12:49 +0000 UTC]

That's the whole point. Making a thumbnail sketch (or speedpaint to define color) is a way to refrain from getting into details too much. So, if you draw it on 72 dpi, and up-res to 300 dpi to finish it, it's absolutely possible. I do it every time. There are several upres methods in Photoshop. I'll discuss them lat0rz

greyorm In reply to Norke [2008-08-02 04:55:05 +0000 UTC]

Exactly. I understand what you mean, I do it with all my work, too. My criticism was only that I think your specific wording on that part (ie: "finishing touches") suggests something else (or it did to me, maybe I'm weird): doing most of the work at 72, and then upping to 300 only at the very end for a couple of minor details. Otherwise, yeah, quick sketch and block in colors at 72, then finish it, refine it, and detail it at 300 is totally do-able.

I don't really go back on my histories much because I made an error, I might go back maybe 10 tops, but I do like to use it for going back and screenshotting my progress since I do get pretty caught up in my colorng, I'll forget to screenshot or something and I like to screenshot progress on my bigger works just because it's fun to look how it goes from point A to point B Well, that's just me. My history default has been set to like 500 or something.

Great tutorial

That was great! I have a fear of opening internet and photoshop at the same time, but I think this will help greatly.

But I don't get step 1 D: and I have no idea what partitions & RAID 0 partitions are... urm, by discs, do you mean like CDs? haha.. I feel stupid~

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Norke In reply to ogum536 [2008-08-01 23:14:36 +0000 UTC]

No, disks are the real disks in your computer. A hard disk (hard drive). A partition is just a divided hard disk.

SecretWalrus In reply to ogum536 [2008-08-01 03:02:23 +0000 UTC]

he's talking about hard drives. Basically, Photoshop uses some hard drive space to put aside bits of data while it's working, so if you have a hard drive that's uncluttered to dedicate to Photoshop it will work faster.
RAID partitioning is a step towards really complex and I would definitely recommend someone who knows what they're doing to do it for you. RAID isn't very necessary though, it's mostly for security and backup purposes to keep data safe if a hard drive dies. So you can ignore the RAID part really.

Sweet!

Great ideas, one thing that urks me a bit about Windows is the fact they put a ceiling cap on Ram eg Vista Basic i use can use no more than 4Gig... ram is a cheap and easy way of fixing performance issues but Vista needs at least 2 Gig to do anything properly, that only leaves two gig to play with...
i wonder if there is a way of turning of this 'capping'
thing?....

Anyway

Great tut bro I cant wait for the next...

Norke In reply to o0O-PILLOWFIGHT-O0o [2008-08-01 23:16:58 +0000 UTC]

You should switch to 64bit then. Only then you get to use a full 4GB capacity.

I don't know why, I'm not that nerdy.

I know this is an old comment, but it's not Microsoft who placed the limitation It's a limitation with the 32bit operating system architecture. So any Microsoft computer or Apple computer won't be able to use more than 3.5GB of RAM if it is running 32bit. Hope that clears it up some.
