I'm pretty sure that this is as simple as it gets to making your own lightning, rather than using lightning brushes that can look out of place.

Of course though, you're probably not going to draw anything that small, so just as a side note, blur "Lightning copy" just enough to blur the edges slightly. Blur "Lightning copy 2" enough to give it a small glow. Blur "Lightning copy 3" enough to give it a large outer glow
