Description
I wanted to do some practicing and test what kind of style variations I have. I could come up with 7 variations for the time being, but there are likely more than these. I may draw few more and post another set or update this one.
I call the first two "default" styles, because they are most natural for me to draw. In fact, I didn't really aim for these two default styles, but I like to draw them the most. These styles have just emerged after a lot of practicing. It's quite funny actually, because I don't really use them much at all. If I'm gonna draw a real manga, I believe I would go with the default style.
The next two, "usual" and "sensual" styles are what I generally want to draw. These have a lot more attention to detailing and refining. Compared to the "default" styles, these require a lot more conscious efforts to get them look good.
The "angular" and "cute" styles were sort of extremes of line handling. I found that the "angular" style fits my working methods quite well. It's also quite close to the "default" style. The "cute" style, on the other hand, doesn't seem to fit me. If I want cuteness, I prefer going with the "true default".
With the seventh variation, I wanted to try more realistic take. I hardly ever draw this kind of style, but I really like it. I like how calm the drawing turned out.
Update:
Eight variant, "slender" style, is quite a different from the rest. Since I usually draw my lines quite bold, I tried drawing the lines very thin for a change. I also drew the character in shojo-like style. It turned out to be so different from the rest that I can almost consider it as an independent style rather than variation.
Number β¨Β is obviously the strongest style, so I drew "guy" style. This is purely for gags, and not very widely used independently. I however find it really fun and I hope I get to use it more in some manga. It's rather hard style because it takes a lot of understanding about the muscle anatomy, which I haven't studied enough. I just added some detailing and hope that it will fool the critical eye
"Serious" style is a bit less extreme version of the "guy" style. I like to draw beautiful girls and then draw them with their eyes full of contempt and oppression. I mostly use it in extreme close view so that the extra detailing of the make up will be visible. This style is also a bit similar to "sensual" style, though this aims to exaggerate the "ugly" side of girls, rather than erotic.
A friend of mine requested "loli" style, so I tried doing it. I'm not sure whether it's really a variant, or just younger version of the character. The body proportions aren't only smaller, but the anatomy is also more childish. She isn't chibi, although the head might be a bit too large.
Then there are the chibis. The two versions I drew are quite different if compared, but I still lumped them together. The smaller version is frequently seen in tutorials.
I probably could have come up more than these, but I'm not sure if I could have drawn more purely unique variants. The few I tried were obvious sub-variants of these. The position of the "serious" and "loli" variants are a bit unclear to me too.
Artists in training: you don't really need to put conscious efforts in devising your style. Your style will emerge when you gain more experience and get familiar with the techniques. Just keep drawing in various styles and mixing them together. Some day you will notice that you have your very own "default" style.

i think all of this types got their lovers. And no one looks like a "whore". You can't really look like a whore you just can be a whore. it's like when people are saying "this looks gay!". never understood that xD

i love them all xDD! special guy style lol! (to fangirl-gone hyper: i dont think many guys read shojo--the style is like you said, so elegant. Slender-to me personally, dosent seem very attractive. If they have curves and they have a flat belly then yes, i would consider that attractive. But slender with no curves or anything is almost manly. Sorta like a young kid or just a guys build. Nothing against people who are slender, its just from what i hear most guys say. they want something to grip or hold onto ^^' and wouldnt the point of hentai be for her to look whoreish and lustful? not elegant and "its gonna take you like 2 years to tap that dude". its a tease i guess. While shojo is suppose be beautiful and dramatic.)

Your version of a sensual/hentai style is just... I don't understand how a man could find that attractive, I think the girl in the slender/shojo style is far more elegant and womanly! The hentai style one looks like a total whore... Anyway, no offense or anything, I'm a girl anyway, it's not like I'd really even know what men find attractive.
Anyway, besides the shojo style, my favourites would have to your true default style, the semi-realistic style, the guy style and the second chibi style (I draw my chibis like that too, hehe. They look really cute that way.)

Haha! Well it's indeed hentai style . Men, or at least I do, have rather strange taste when it comes to hentai. I don't think it's necessary to go deeper in to that matter. That's not something I would get offended, so no worries.
Thanks for commenting

funnily, I am also a girl and out of all these, I liked hentai style the most and shojo one the least. Then again, I've often been told that I think like a guy and online tests for brain gender say that too
. Or it's all due to exposure to fakku.net and hentai by Yamatogawa (best h artist eva, btw). So yeah, my two cents
peace out

Maybe it's mainly just the upbringing how people view these things. Those with more decent background find it unappealing while those with more exposure to vulgar material can accept more explicit content.
Yamatogawa... gotta check that one out. Thanks!

lol, while not from puritanical family, I wouldn't call my background 'undecent' . But yeah, religion and customs of family & society come into play. But at certain point, when one becomes and adult, they gotta start thinking for themselves
If they still bash sexuality and disregard how essential and natural it is for humanity, it's their problem
Not saying my views are the only right ones, but it's no coincidence majority of psychopaths and serial killers are born into very strict religious and moral upbringing
Nature and nurture play it's part, and -unfortunatelly- putting that strong stress on FORBIDDEN in sex and other life's aspects, may result in people breaking boundries when they snap
. It's better to keep things moderate and not be too crazy in either direction
Unfortunatelly, I am full-on perverted and that sometimes comes off as rude to conservative ppl
Definately check him out, I think you'll appreciate the style. It actually bears similarities to your own, I think. He's great

True, being honest with oneself also means accepting one's sexuality. My parents have always been quite liberal, so I have had a lot of freedom to grow up. I'm quite surprised how open minded they are towards my drawings as well
Oh, Β this was new to me. I had no idea about the connection between violent behavior and strict upbringing, I thought it would be the opposite. But that might be the case indeed. I myself have always thought that it's the education and strict upbringing that makes people less interested in sexuality, but the stress emerging as hostility... interesting.
I agree, moderation with everything is the best. I usually manage to keep my decent facade when dealing with people, though if they see my drawings, I occasionally make rather perverted jabs (in order to try make them think that I'm not seriously perverted, not sure if my attempts of deception are good enough though xD).
More the reason to check the him out

still, it's just deception They better accept you for what you are
And yeah, supression and denial may definatelly lead to fixation on the topic or pushing someone over the edge

haha, high-five then
I like him not just for the penstroke, but for the plot he goes with (lot of vanillas). He manages to pull sexy and kinky without giving off overly gross vibe, because the stories are usually very cute, positive and have a happy ending No unnecessary harm done to either party.
