Designed as part of the 2176 Fleet shake-up, the Ascendant-Class Dreadnought could be called a 'fast battleship' or a 'heavy cruiser', depending on how many words one wants to use. The upper echelons of the Admiralty preferred 'dreadnought', and so the class was settled and less words were used. Where the larger Extinction-Class Battleships are 'stick-around-and-fight' WarShips and the smaller Impact-Class Cruisers are distinctly in the 'multi-role' specification, the Ascendant-Class could be considered the 'fighting troubleshooter' of the Fleet. They are most often found far from Republic shores and in Battle Group-sized formations taking care of small problems before they become big problems.

Like all next-generation Republic Defense Force Starships, they mount the latest-generation Quantum Frameshift Drive (QFD) as well as an Eien Replication Suite, Multi-Node Shield System, PTU Hull and Armor Structures, Synthetic Sensor Array, Envelope Particle Beam Array, Cyclone Torpedo Launchers, and a whole host of other systems that could largely be shortened to three or four letters. Biological crew complement is in the range of thirty to thirty five, with a good number of REDSHIRTs to perform auxiliary crew functions.
