I'll be honest - I'm not thrilled with this design yet. So this version will have to serve as a placeholder til I come up with something I love.

The Extinction-Class is the largest WarShip in the Republic Fleet and the only ship really designed around the idea of sticking around to fight. General Republic war-fighting strategy calls for a rapid reduction in the enemies' ability to make and sustain conflict. Thus the other warships are there to put ordinance on target; They are the air force, to use a modern analogy. If - and it is a hopefully rare 'if' - one were to encounter an Extinction-Class vessel it would likely be as part of a much, much, much larger force where these battleships would make up the majority weight of the force while smaller screening and flanking vessels would provide most of the secondary make-up.
