It has been years - decades - since the Defense Force has fielded a proper carrier and they aren't about to start now! While it carries the Class-type of 'Carrier', the 'Cluster is more akin to an arsenal ship than it is to a proper carrier. Most of its payload is ordinance of one stripe or another - particularly the various elements of what are commonly referred to as VDAs (Very Dangerous Arrays). These are networked missiles or torpedoes that use their numerous targeting sensors to create a large over-arcing array with many times the capability of even a large ship-based sensor platform. Of course the Defense Force has expanded on the idea and the Cluster-Class will serve as a platform capable of rapidly delivering CANARY, BEARTRAP, and TRIPWIRE arrays as well as the common VDA into the battlespace.

Like most modern Defense Force vessels, the Cluster-Class has a crew complement numbering in the dozens - 3 - as well as a few hundred of the now-ubiquitous ARC4 synthetic seamen. It also mounts all of the other customary warships systems though as one might expect it concentrates its defensive systems on the 'defensive' - 'Clusters are expected to operate with supporting WarShips, even if those are other Cluster-Class vessels. Because most of what the Class does is organized around large-scale conflict very few of these vessels will be encountered in the day-to-day; most will be seconded to the Dark Fleet, sent to wait in deep space for the moment when the stars are right and they are called to war.
