Description A response to all the somebodies who've asked for a coloring tutorial. My last Process guide is no longer the method I use, so I thought I'd make a new one.

Hopefully that wasn't super confusing *-*

The main software is Paint Tool SAI. Total time was about 2.5 hours.

ahhh thank you so much for this! you've been one of my absolute favourite artists for years, i've always admired your loose yet defined style, and your colour sense!
this tutorial has mostly taught me to trust my instincts-- i tend to work this way but i always erase everything after a while because i'm "not doing it right"
so-- thank you for sharing!! i'm gonna go paint something right now!

Wow, this is awesome!I love the messy look in your paintings, and I always wonder how it's done. Just one question, do you use only one layer after you merge the lineart and the base colors?Or you create new layers for details or different colors?

nuriko-kun In reply to tori-no-uta [2013-03-22 06:53:38 +0000 UTC]

Generally I work on the same layer since I want the blending effect. If I'm adding something new in the foreground, I might use a new layer in case it goes wrong and I want to get rid of it, or if I might want to run a filter on that object only. Sometimes I also use new layers set to Multiply/Dodge/Overlay/etc.

This is very helpful! I was wondering if you knew where I could find some good colour theory tutorials, because I feel like the ones I've read aren't very in-depth. I often feel like the colours I choose don't always work well together. I'd like to feel more confident about the colours I choose. Got any tips or tutorials you can point me to?

Personally, I find it helpful to look at pictures that have a great palette, stare at the colors (or eyedrop them if I can't tell what they are by eye), and basically figure out what they're doing that I don't do. Then I try out these new things the next time I draw.
As for tutorials, I don't look at them myself so I can't direct you to any, sorry ><

hi, i have question did u use SAI to draw those leaves and select those leaves using photoshop to make it blur??

love your tutorial btw~

Yep, that's exactly it. SAI's brush tapers nicely unlike Photoshop's, so it makes leaf shapes really easily
