Description
you have to downloadyou'll never see it all otherwise
i was too lazy to draft section views of specialized components so i put big notes indexed to points
compare to the original sketched designs

Compare to the final product

compare to a revised product after the useless pine it was made of catastrophically failed

version 1.2 is a rushed repair job merely so i could have something to present at a school art exhibit
i do have a version 2.0 in mind-
i don't have wood shop for awhile though so i might not get to make it for some time
i might draft the designs for 2.0 like I've done here-
i need something to do in that class

Do you think if it was made in the right size and weighed the average amount a human can carry...do you think it could kill a zombie????

you could kill zombie with this one- only you'd get tired after about a dozen
a lighter one would do less damage per hit but allow for more hits
my planned second switch axe will be more reasonably sized

yea... unless the wielder was really strong, but even then, they would get tired
yep ^^
cool

This is great thanks for the headsup and the encouragement
although i have to ask
what exactly happened to the pine one and is there a wood you would reccomend instead?
and is it possible to create this from another material other than wood ie cardboard, foam or plastic?

for sure other material would work just as well
i would suggest some sort of light stiff foam
like insulation board
as for the pine one
i had for a 30 day trial of a flash movie maker
i used it to make my icon-
but i tried to make a movie with the switch axe
except it's really heavy so switching it was awkward and slow
i figured if i was putting it on the internet it should look pro
therefore i tried to switch it really fast
20pounds of pine (green blade in new plans) slid 5 feet in about half a second and laws of physics dictate that it should stay in motion- so regardless of the pins- it did stay in motion right off the the rest of it-
wait it gets better-
i figured okay i can fix that
-gets glue and wood screws
thinks about putting it back together-
i decided that before i fixed it i would practice flipping the end blade (red blade in new plan) around because it would be easier now that it was light
well 5pounds of blade made a 180 degree rotation in the blink of an eye and hit the hidden stop pin
(note 3 in the new plan)
once again physics thwarted me as the blade stayed in motion regardless of the pins.
now i have several pieces of switch axe
and i think to myself
i could fix this
but, why bother this is clearly a design flaw- i know how to fix in the future- but if i put it all together again won't i face the same problem
i decided i would quietly set aside the whole thing and design a second one
but then my woodshop teacher requested i bring in my switch axe for a school exhibit
i couldn't disappoint so i hurriedly threw together version 1.2 with whatever i had laying around my basement
anyway long story short it should work fine with lighter materials- or stronger wood
make sure to orient the grain on the red blade so that it is parallel to the direction the green blade moves- and perhaps add some wood screws to hold the back together where the red blade hinges on it's axle
i do know a guy who made one using one long hole through the middle whereas mine has two
[link]
his looks pretty solid
i doubt i could break it
and i know someone who made a cosplay weapon from my designs
[link]
i would recommend something like black walnut but again more important than the wood is the grain direction
stresses should be perpendicular to grain direction
i screwed that up because i was used to working with small trees i had cut and dried
circular grains are a lot tougher than almost flat grains you'll find in store bought materials
i don't know a lot about other materials
it might be bendy under it own weight with cardboard
but a cardboard red blade would be a good way to go
and probably a cardboard green blade too
but the gray stem would need to be something a little more stiff
maybe plastic- i'm not sure what kinds are available
please feel free to ask for any further clarification
or check any ideas with me
i would feel like a bit of a failure if someone couldn't successfully make a switch axe from my designs
sorry for the long winded response

no need to apologise for the long response i'm elated to be getting feedback and assistance
i have to admit i'm not the most wood savy nor a carpenter of any sort. However I do know my way around a band-saw. I'm glad you've given me this much guidence I can't wait to partake in this challenge
