Specificity:

  • one of the three battleship classes of the Kobol Defence Force

  • according to the criteria catalog of the Office for Intergalactic Investigations (OII), the civilian and military foreign intelligence service of the IUSP, the Zeus-Class is a conventional battleship-carrier hybrid without the easily reconfigurable multifunctional multi-purpose hangar decks, which are a Milky Way concept that could not be established in the KDF

  • following the unification of the survivors of the Twelve Tribes of Kobol and the surviving Cylons to form the United Tribes of Kobol, there was also a unification of the armed forces and a major reformation and reorganisation of both forces and their ships to form the new Kobol Defence Force

  • a result of the analyses of the Colonial-Cylon Wars carried out at the founding of the KDF is the combination of the primary ship types of both fleets (Battlestar, Basestar) in the new fleet in order to balance the disadvantages of the two ship types with their respective advantages

  • to reinforce this development, the advantages of the ship types were further emphasised in the development of the new classes

  • the culmination of this reinforcement of the Battlestars' battleship character is the Zeus-Class, the largest Battlestar and thus the largest warship in the KDF.

  • the Zeus-Class was designed even more for direct combat, not to say "close combat"*, against enemy capital ships than the other two Battlestars

    * "Close combat" is of course relative and means that these Battlestars engage enemy ships at a distance of between one and ten ship lengths, i.e. between 1.5 and 15 km (but sometimes even closer)

  • in particular, the L4V2V "Thor" plasma-based artillery and the R-94D "Overlord"Missile Launcher are designed for maximum impact power

  • however, this comes at the cost of range; none of these weapon systems is a threat to moving shield-equipped targets at a distance of more than 20 km

  • but, the R-94D "Overlord" Missile Launcher is the only UTK mobile launch system capable of firing the AIDES-38 "Hades" missile.

  • the "Hades" missile, in turn, is the only KDF missile capable of carrying the "Cerberus" warhead, a multiple-thermal-warhead, three warheads each with an explosive power of 25 Gt TNT equivalent and 83 ML thermal power, making the "Cerberus" warhead the most powerful thermal warhead and thus the most powerful weapon system of the KDF

        *83 ML or MegaLeaby means a fireball with 83000000 °C (83 million) in its core


  • the I7F58 "Vulture" KEW-Artillery, on the other hand, has a longer range than these two weapon systems, but compared to the I7F58 "Vulture" (L/H) KEW-Artillery fitted to the Athena-class, the range is halved but the rate of fire doubled.

  • this "close combat" specialisation against enemy capital ships also applies to the Python Multirole Combat Aerospace Craft and the Aquilas gunboats, with which the Zeus class is equipped before all other ships of the KDF

  • these have shield systems that allow these two types of space fighters not to return to the hangar even in the event of immediate enemy contact between the capital ships, but to continue to support the mother ship

  • the armament of these two small space crafts was also chosen according to their potential opponent

  • the Python Mk II is armed sufficiently to engage enemy capital ships up to the size of a cruiser, at least if the eight Malleo missiles are replaced by a single sensor-guided Tonitrua/M missile or an Ignis/M-type explosive device

  • For battleships, the Python Mk II is not a real threat, but the Pythons, as a squadron or with multiple squadrons, can greatly weaken enemy shields through numerical "superiority" and disrupt enemy manoeuvres, making the Battlestars job easier.

  • the Aquila gunboat is also a real danger to battleships, at least when attacked by a complete Aquilas squadron.

  • other adaptations to Zeus-class "close combat"- tactics include heavy armour and the removal of flight pods in favour of a dorsal landing bay

  • the Zeus Battlestars have some of the strongest and thickest armour of any known warship


  • only the armed cargo ships/blockade runners of Stargate Command, the Guardian-Angel-Class, have even stronger armouring

  • especially the underside of the Zeus Battlestar is extremely strongly protected

  • this is necessary because the own space fighters cannot return to the ship and land if the mother ship has activated its shields

  • It is therefore common for the Battlestar, should the withdrawal of its own fighters become necessary, to deactivate its shields and turn its massively armoured ventral side towards the enemy

  • this allows the fighters to land relatively safely in the dorsal landing bay.

  • the removal of the Battlestars' traditional flight pods is the most controversial adaptation of the Zeus class to the new tactics

  • because the flying pods not only served the traffic of their own small ships, but were also part of the defensive measures, i.e. they also served to protect the centrally located areas of the ship such as the hangar decks.

  • Nevertheless, the Admiralty decided to dispense with this design element, as a number of Battlestars were destroyed by the Cylons during the Colonial-Cylon wars, through concentrated fire on the flight pods (keyword: entry port).

  • therefore, the Zeus-Class has an internal landing bay, whose armoured gates are only opened during actual take-offs and landings, otherwise they are closed, which minimises the risk of hits in the landing bay

  • the launching tubes for the Pythons are also equipped with flaps, which excludes accidental hits on a tube

  • a final, because subsequent, adjustment is the structural reinforcement and installation of shock absorbers at the dorsal tip of the bow, which allow "ramming" manoeuvres

  • contrary to popular belief, especially among civilians, this does not mean that a Zeus Battlestar uses the bow like a ram spur of an ancient naval warship to ram the enemy hull

  • instead, in the heat of battle it happens very often, not to say most of the time, that a Zeus Battlestar actually gets too close to an enemy ship


  • but if two ships with active shields come so close that their shield bubbles touch, this can cause severe damage to both ships, especially to the shield systems and power supply

  • however, if a ship without active shields hits a shield bubble, the ship with active shields suffers the above damage, while the ship without active shields, on the other hand, suffers severe structural damage.

  • but this depends on the "angle of impact"

  • Thanks to the shock absorbers in the bow area, Zeus-class battlestars are able to "ram" the enemy shield at an angle of 45-75°, optimally 60-70° (i.e. relatively sideways) relatively undamaged, thus extremely weakening the enemy shields

  • this daring manoeuvre is known as the "Hera" manoeuvre, named after Commander Hera Agathon, who commanded one of the first Zeus-class Battlestars, the K.D.S. "Prometheus", and was the first to perform this manoeuvre

  • this was indeed an accident the first time, the Zeus-Class was built without shock absorbers at that time

  • but after this accident was of great advantage to the KDF for the outcome of the battle in which it occurred, Commander Agathon quickly called for the development of a "shock absorber" system

  • because even without any intention, the probability of such a collision in a battle with Zeus classes was and is simply too high, if only because of the extremely high mass of the Zeus-Class, which is difficult to compensate for even with the help of gravimetric auxiliary systems (the Zeus-Class is as manoeuvrable as a brick).

  • Commander Agathon, however, began flight manoeuvres soon after the introduction of the absorbers, which made such collisions even more "probable"(that she was very successful with it need not be mentioned)
