Description It's time for and Cop Story folks are going to a pool party! Hopefully I'll draw more pictures like these before summer is over. (But before that I'll work on some comics so... yeah.)

Obviously they can never pass up a chance to play with a puppy - in this case it's Bugsy who belongs to Roddy (not pictured ...yet?) and they both belong to Sephiramy ! As usual, everyone behaving atrociously is mine. In left to right, top to bottom-

Mikey and his sister Michelle - well, if Donny is around it's really likely Mikey is around too. And he and his sister are already looking forward to getting a dog. Or two. Or make it three. All that's left is the small matter of informing their mother - hey, maybe they should surprise her?
Donny and Danny are not prepared to share the puppy. If anyone besides me is trying to count the times the siblings try to make each other's lives worse, as of now Danny is in the lead. QUICK DONNY THINK OF SOMETHING
Teague bashing his classmates, the universe and everything as usual. The classmates are not pictured but I'll try to draw at least a couple of them at the party before it's over. Who knows, maybe I'll get an achievement award too...
Wayland Barker and his mother (who just happens to be the right hand woman of an elusive mafia boss Mr. Reilly) - Mrs. barker is really not the kind of mother who goes out of her way to keep her kids happy, so I guess she's here for some mysterious business reasons (don't tell the cops ). Wayland just wants to have fun though. Mrs. Barker, THERE IS NO PERSON ALIVE THAT IS TOO OLD TO PET A DOG!

Aww I love that you used the dog to show how each set of characters reacts to the situation

Teague confuses me, he's dismissive of everything, yet in a way it seems like he doesn't actually mean it, it's kind of like he wants to compliment the dog, but doesn't want it to appear like a compliment so makes it sound rude lol, I don't know! Do I get an achievement award for making no sense?

Thank you!

Haha! Teague is a teenager after all so he isn't always necessarily logical. But yeah, he likes the dog and he doesn't hate his classmates. He's just going through a "look i'm so sarcastic" phase most teenagers have. And he's in a new class (a new school even) and not handling it that well.

These are tons of fun. One dog and plenty of reactions.

I love how Bugsy seems to have accepted this life of suffering by the third panel.

It's not like he has much choice. It's hard being a small and not really intimidating animal...

YOU GO MICHELLE GET A DOG !
Do I get an achievement award if I say I like Teague ? Because I do x) And Wayland terrible mother
As always your backgrounds are stunning And still, poor dog, but he doesn't seem to be that annoyed by getting all this attention, so maybe he's lucky to have all those children around him ^^

The sad part is that if Michelle got offered an option of putting Mikey in a home and getting a dog instead she would at least SERIOUSLY CONSIDER IT. Because the way their situation at home is now there's no way their mother is getting them a dog.

EVERYONE GETS ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS! Even my ordinary school (well, I was in a "gifted" class but still) used to overdo it (at the end of the year if you didn't have any particular achievement they'd give you an award for "being helpful in classroom" or something, I don't remember if they gave those to everyone but even back then I was like "come on, seriously?") so I suspect in special schools they overdo it A LOT MORE.

The sad part about Wayland's mother is that she actually loves him. I'll get into that when I get to draw them more in the comic.

Generally I think that children pestering pets is a socially-acceptable form of animal abuse but Bugsy is friendly and doesn't seem to mind much.

And thank you!

Hell, Michelle :/ I hope some neighbours or friends of them get a dog then. It's not the best but it's still better than no dog at all (believe me, I know )

Ooh interesting. Achievement awards didn't exist in my school ! You got bad points if you were bad though ! I don't really think achievement awards are a thing here ? We don't even have anything else than a piece of bad paper when we finish our college studies, so why would they bother for the rest ?

It depends on the children, I think ? I never had any problems with animals because I knew that if they didn't want anything to do with me, I'd better leave them alone. On the contrary one of my brothers got his hands and ears pinched more than once because he made a thing about pulling our dog's tail. Heh, he deserved it !

Yeah, definitely! Having some dog you can have around is great - when I was a kid I was friends with one of my classmates who had a dog, and looking back I kind of suspect I was more friends with the dog than with the classmate (she could be a bit of a jerk).

Huh, I don't think we have bad points but those awards weren't anything you could really use though, I mean it was just a piece of fancy paper your teacher wrote something on. Idk, maybe some kids need that to feel good about themselves but to me it seems almost offensive (like, if the kid is smart they see through it, is the kid doesn't understand what's going on there it seems like lying).

And yeah, I treated animals decently too but I know not all kids do it and some adults don't stop it soon enough or at all. Big and mature animals usually deal with it themselves (like you said, pinching) but if the animal can't defend itself you get a miserable animal and if it can but can't control its strength you get those news about toddlers getting mauled by dogs where you seem to be the only one asking who the hell left them without supervision in the first place.

Hahah dogs are better than people anyway That's what I do now, when I go to someone's place I'm a little too over their pet ^^"

Yeah ok. Weird. I mean, praising children when they do good things is good, but why make a fuss about it ?

OMG YES. "but my dog is so nice, he wouldn't hurt a fly" well it's still and animal, with teeth and claws, and when it's tired of being annoyed, it'll snap. I'm really not happy seing photos of babies sleeping with cats or dogs. It's very dangerous, even if the animal is the nicest of the world, you still can't predict his reactions. (also people should be taught about signs for when an animal is angry or ill at ease ? I thought about that on Sunday when I saw that Benj could not read that a horse clearly had enough of him petting it... ok horses are not that common but people can't read it on their own cats or dogs very often (see "smiling" dogs)).

I have no clue. I guess it's just easier than actually praising someone for something they actually did, you know, a kid brings a paper home, parents see that the kid was praised and so on. Nobody gives a toss that it's a lot of fuss over some airy-fairy nothingness.

Yeah, exactly! Plus when a puppy is annoying a big dog the dog grabs it with teeth and shakes it and it's okay but a human baby can get its neck snapped that way.

That bulldoggie is just made of pure adorableness <3
And I'm growing quite fond of the overly cynical Teague Some character types that would be annoying in reality are really lovely to write.

Also, I know I've said that already, but I'm still amazed at the richness of your traditionals. Aren't those difficult to lineart over the I suppose oilish pencil layers? Sorry if I asked about that before, my memory is not always at its finest ^^"

Oly-RRR In reply to Smodyl [2014-08-03 19:11:35 +0000 UTC]

I know what you mean about Teague! He's great to write and honestly there's a part of his behaviour that is based on my own teen years but sometimes I see really annoying posts on tumblr and realise that Teague could easily write something like that.

No worries, I don't mind questions about materials! For some reason when people say "cool brushes" about digital stuff it usually annoys me but I can talk about traditional materials for hours, I dunno if you feel the same way since you also work with both? Anyway, the trick is that lineart is literally under the colour - pens I use don't get smudged by Copics or watercolours (I generally use Faber-Castell but Copic pens started to cost almost the same money if you get non-refillable ones so I'm considering switching to those) and then I can put pencils on top of that. If pencils get over lineart too much I sometimes go over it with a pen or black pencil again but usually don't bother with it.

Also I generally stick to watercolour pencils but I tried a few Derwent Coloursoft pencils recently and dammit, now I want more of those too (you have over 100 pencils already Oly, just stop this madness).

Smodyl In reply to Oly-RRR [2014-08-09 15:45:19 +0000 UTC]

Yep I do both traditional and digital. I like drawing traditionally more because at least I rest from the comp and the physical process itself can be very relaxing and inspiring; that is, when it's not frustrating as hell Not sure how I feel about brushes 'cause I almost exclusively use the basic round one. First, I'm lazy, second, so far other brushes in Gimp don't always work well when I'm using the tablet. I could try using something else than Gimp but we go back to me being lazy.
Sometimes I can see the marks left by cool brushes used by other people so I think I can understand complimenting the choice :3 You're right though that brushes don't do the work for you.

Ah, I usually put the second lineart on top of the colours because I feel the one underneath them looks less intense after being covered with anything

I think I have some Derwents, they seemed ok :3 Do you dissolve the watercolour pencils or just use them as regular, slightly oilier ones?
I have lots of pencils too, now some markers as well, but I'm staying with my parents for the summer and left the traditional tools in the student flat So practicing digital stuff it is, at least for now.

Oly-RRR In reply to Smodyl [2014-08-09 17:33:07 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, traditional feels sort of nice! And eh, I use PS but before I switched to newer version most custom brushes didn't work for me either. I get what you mean about being lazy - I know PS because it's industry standard, like if you need anything for typographical print it has to be processed in PS but honestly it's a bit wonky for art so I'd like to work more with a couple of programs that are more specialised and I have them installed and everything but never find the time to do much in them since I'm already used to PS.

Nah, I never dissolve watercolour pencils, I dissolve these   because they look really dark otherwise but with watercolour pencils I just like that they are brighter, softer and oilier than regular pencils. When I first got watercolour pencils back in highschool I kept trying to use them as a more convenient version of watercolour paint but eventually I understood that I have to treat them as simply another medium to get best results. And yeah, the trouble with traditional tools is that they are harder to take with you ...though my main computer is a desktop so I shouldn't talk, really.

UGH, I love your art. I'm pretty sure I haven't had the chance to tell you that yet? But I've been following devs through the party group and I'm always so pleased when yours pop up! Such diversity and personality in your characters, it's so fun and inspiring ; 7 ;

And traditional to boot! Your colors are so warm and saturated I loooove it. Lemme just shut up now and adore your art from afar again XDDD.

Oh my Gooodddddddd hahaha I LOVE THEM ALL!! I had no idea you were doing a SERIES of Bugsys!! Hee heeeeeeeeeeeee! Also you got him down perfectly, LOL he is just kind of a sentient potato. A series of lumps and wrinkles that occasionally - but rarely - moves around. You managed to capture him just right! And all of your characters are so fun and varied as always, and I just love it! *u* Thank you thank you thank you!!!

D'aw, thank you! Glad you like it! I still want to draw Bugsy with Wanker but it didn't seem to fit with these pictures so hopefully I'll get to do it later.

One of my rats was kind of like Bugsy - friendly but incredibly apathetic, when he didn't want to be cuddled he didn't even wriggle, he sort of went limp and slid out of hands like some kind of fuzzy jellyfish.
