This took me entirely too long to finish... it's not even that it was so much to draw, because it really wasn't, my attention span was just being so stupidly short.But yeah, I never posted anything involving Ichibay (the kid Vilkas was later framed for killing). [Also, another excuse to draw Vilkas acting contrary to his usual paranoid demeanor.] The two of them were about 14/15 when they met and Vilkas was still pretty messed up over Beijeye's death; he ended up going through an angry, self-destructive, jerk phase (of course, Handwing almost seemed to get along with him better when he was acting like that). He was moved to a separate bunkhouse because he kept getting in fights, and started letting Handwing sneak in. But when Ichibay was transferred, the only space left, was with Vilkas. No one told Vilkas that he was getting a bunkmate, because they figured he'd just act out about it; no one warned Ichibay that he was getting stuck with the "problem kid", they just kind of hoped that since Ichibay was a medic trainee, rather than another fighter, it might be fine. They eventually got to be friends, but it took a while.

I just like sitting here and taking this all in. Like the smoke trails, the disheveled blinds, junk under the bed, the little bits of scabbing on his knees and hand. Things like that are so cool and so well thought out

It would really depend on the situation, official rank is usually set and they're expected not to challenge it, doing so could be considered disrupting order and is more likely to get them demoted rather than moved up. Fighting still happens just out of the fact that they're much more instinctive and their society doesn't really discourage acting on aggressive instincts. Though in these two's case specifically, Ichibay is not ranked, but he is in a needed trade, which kind of negates the need for him to be ranked on strength and fighting ability; Vilkas tries to intimidate him a bit but it's more so just an attempt to not get ratted out for the shit he's doing.

Honestly that makes sense. We used to have huge dogs, and they always held pack behavior with who was here first. (oddly putting the littlest dog in the position of the most power until she died) Then it was..hhmmm (this was a while ago)... 1. Buck, 2. Heyboy, (2?) 3. Mindy, 4. McKenzy... When Buck the golden retriever got old and sick, Heyboy (german wire haired pointer) took after him one night and beat his ass, which got him locked in the garage for like a week. Buck got sicker and died, them Heyboy was leader, but it was contested by Mindy (a dachshund) And that never came to odds because my mom now hated and distrusted Heyboy and with the size difference, they weren't allowed to play together anymore after that. So he kinda became king of the empire of one, and Mindy lorded over her sister, McKenzy. Heyboy eventually passed of Diabetes and we have Max (toto dog) and Mosquito (small, mutt dog) Mindy and McKenzy are now 16 and the new order is 1.Mindy, 2. Max, (4?) 3. Mosquito, (3?) 4. McKenzy... Kenzy is too "mother hen" to push boundaries and always brings up the rear. Max pesters Mindy, because she is old, slow, and clumsy with age, but he never full on goes after her. Just, pokes her butt and "giggles" when she gets pissed. Moe (mosquito) wont go near Mindy and walks a wide circle around her no matter what. She allows McKenzy to eat with her and sleep beside her and share a kennel when needed. But Kenzy still just hangs out on the edge there.

I think most domestic animals are like that. The one that's been there the longest, regardless of size of anything, ends up being the highest until they start showing obvious signs of weakness, because their smell is on everything and they're the most familiar with how things in the household work. My cat is 17 and holds dominance and full reign over the others, then there's the two in the middle always fighting, and the one at the bottom who doesn't dare challenge the others. The younger ones sometimes playfully bug the old one, but they know when they've made her mad and back down immediately if she even hisses at them.

I think thats whats going on here. Even though McKenzy is the same age as Mindy, Max knows that Mindy is old and falls over a lot. Therefor is not a threat, even if shes pissed, whats she gonna do? So he bugs her relentlessly until my folk yell at him or physically stop him from pestering her. She gets mad and growls and shows her teeth, but she can't physically challenge him. Max also knows that despite where Mckenzy should be in the order, she will always choose to stay at the bottom, so he has no reason to pester her. And Mosquito dont really seem to give a shit one way or the other. Max will occasionally bother him, and even though hes younger than Max, he responds the same as Mindy. Just growling and holding his place, like he dont know what to do.
