Description It's true. I'll use stuff like "srsly" and "ppl" on occasion, but I use punctuation (even commas!), I generally double space at the end of my sentences, and I don't use things like "u" instead of "you".

You have to have a subscription to use stamps.

Should what be "natural"? Being too lazy to reach your precious muscles an extra millimeter on your phone, or an extra inch for an key, on your keyboard? It's lazy, and only tells me that their time is more important than actually talking to me coherently. It's ugly, illegible, and lazy.

No you don't, you learn it from other mindless teens who are too lazy to spell out their words. You don't "naturally" understand texttalk anymore than you "naturally" understand any language. Babies don't naturally understand what their parents are saying, it takes months and hard work to consistently show a baby what "banana" and "crayon" and "do not put this in your mouth" means. And babies are a hell of a lot smarter than teens are.

Seriously, how old are you, and how poor is your education system where you live?

When I had my EnV and couldn't open it to use the full keyboard, meaning I had to do it the old fashioned way with the numeric keys on the front, I'd sometimes revert to net speak. *shame* But it'd have to be pretty important for me to text at all if that was the case, otherwise I'd just wait till I could type out a full reply.

I... have no idea what any of those mean. Oh but I do use "atm" (at the moment) a fair bit, I forgot that. But I always take into account who I'm talking to. I know Laura will get the abbreviations, but if I'm texting BJ (a woman I used to work with) I know she won't, so I don't use them. I also know not to use XD with a lot of people because they won't get it. That one is a lot harder not to use than I thought it'd be though.

People who don't use proper English just make themselves sound stupid, and it gives youth today a bad name. People assume our grades will crash and burn because we don't have the ability to use proper English when we have to.
I never waste my phones batteries, an extra two seconds to spell out "people" instead of "ppl" won't make a difference.
If you are too lazy to use proper English then I don't want to waste my time and energy trying to understand your stupid "time saving" cryptic messages.

Luckily all the people I text use complete sentences. I probably just wouldn't text them otherwise.

I hate when I'm unsure of the spelling on something in texts. I'm sure I can add spell check somehow but I'm so used to using Google chrome and it always just showing up to tell me I've spelled things wrong.

It annoys people when I do it, they say it takes me to long. I say that I'm preserving the language. I've had teachers in school have to tell the class no 'chat speak' in your papers because people are actually using it in a college paper.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

onnawufei In reply to animegirlfroggy [2010-07-22 13:46:04 +0000 UTC]

That shouldn't surprise me... but it kind of does.

When I was in high school (never went to college so that's the best I've got) chat speak wasn't really prevalent, but Ebonics was. We had to do something in English class where we took a style of writing and wrote out a scene in it, and for some reason my group (which contained of me and two white guys) chose Ebonics. I don't think I've ever felt so white in my entire life.

That wasn't really related to texting at all, but I felt the urge to share.

animegirlfroggy In reply to onnawufei [2010-07-22 16:04:13 +0000 UTC]

You should have seen me asking the first teacher 'do people REALLY use chat speak in their essays?' I was pretty horrified, I mean I know my grammar isn't the best, since I wasn't really taught grammar until high school (><) but I at least try.

I'm glad you shared, it made me smile.

Getting lengthy texts always makes me feel better anyway. Sort of like "hey, I matter to this person". It doesn't really make any sense, but oh well.

Because half the time, I can't understand what the hell the other person is trying to say. I speak English. Not chatspeak.

I honestly can't tell if you're trying to troll or if you're genuinely confused and bothered by the fact that I can't stand chatspeak...

No, it's not. I find that even some people younger than me don't understand textspeak. I can understand a few abbreviations but most others I can't even guess what they're supposed to mean. I never immersed myself into that type of social group, even when I was nearly 13 and we first got the internet. I couldn't understand it much then, and I definitely don't understand it now. Proper spelling/grammar just comes naturally to me and I do it without even thinking. It doesn't cost me any extra time because I've never had to put much thought into it in the first place. Putting anything into textspeech requires a lot more thought and time for me.

... Typing out the full word doesn't waste the batteries any more than just having the phone on. I've never heard of a phone that loses power because someone's decided to type out "you" instead of "u".

So the question really is, why don't people use proper English?
