Description
Yay! Finally done! I made this for ~kigaromaru and ~Nareya althoug they are going to have to try to apply it to Photoshop. It shouldn't be too hard but I've never tried. I always apply Photoshop tutorials to The GIMP though no problem so it should be fine.If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask!

Weird - does it list every file type except .gif or something? PNG doesn't support animation sadly so you would not be able to save it under that. :/
Were you trying to save it on the last step?

What version of Gimp do you have an is this the case even when you don't press 'optimize for gif'? (concerning the save extension selections)
Mine gives about 20 options and I am using Gimp 2.

Lotusleaf645 In reply to shadowdeath-wolf-666 [2008-06-25 07:34:25 +0000 UTC]
To save your animation as a .gif, do you type in the name and then put.gif at the end? It kinda looks like this. [name].gif
If you do, and it doesn't work, I have nothing to tell ya... sorry.
Hope I helped!

When you say it doesn't let you - does it not come up as an option or does it just not work when you select it?

it says something like file (whatever file is) cannot save. then it says unknown file type. I can get a screen shot if you want

You will probably have to get the plug-in then.

Maybe this will help:
One of the limitations the GIMP has is that you cannot save GIF files unless you download a plug-in. This is because a company called Unisys claims to have a copyright on the GIF standard. When you buy a program like Photoshop, some of the money you pay is passed on to Unisys for the privelege of using the GIF format. Since the GIMP is free, no money changes hands, so you can't save GIF images unless you live in a country where this copyright doesn't exist. You can, however, load GIF images just fine and save them into a different format (like PNG, which is free).
If you live in a country that doesn't have this copyright, or you just don't care, you can download the GIF plug-in file. Then just run the installer and restart GIMP.
Unfortunately, I can't find any reliable-looking .gif plug-in files for The GIMP to suggest to you because I don't want it to be my fault if it does something bad to your computer. lol
If you don't mange to find any I can look here [link] if you want. I don't see what harm it could do to your comp but you never know with stuff like that, right?

I still use GIMP for a lot of stuff. It's just less complicated so when I'm doing less complicated things, it's more useful.
Plus, PhotoShop doesn't animate. (To my knowledge + Kiga, Banana, Alex, Margot and Audrey have it and don't know how to get it to animate stuff.)
