Description
I can't stand when people call Piccolo a better father than Goku. Goku sacrificed himself twice to save him from death. And Piccolo kidnapped Gohan, left him to die for 6 months, trained with him and then sacrificed himself to save him. I think the only legitimate things that people can say about Piccolo are "Piccolo's last stand" and when Goku was showing a little TOO much confidence in Gohan. But you can't hold Goku being absent against him because he was dead and both time he was dead because he sacrificed himself. SO SHUT THE F*CK UP!!!!Related content

Like for real how the shit are you going to hold DEATH over someone's head for being a "Bad Parent." THAT'S NOT HOW IT WORKS! And to top it all off, you clearly see multiple times in Z that he did absoulutely everything he could to spend time with him and the only reason he chose to stay dead which is something no one in the real world actually gets to choose in the first place was because he knew it would keep his family safe.
Low and behold that was the right call because the DAY he comes back the whole world immediately went to shit.
The only times he's died where SACRIFICES to SAVE Gohan and people call him a bad father...Boi...

They probably just ignore it and believes that it was bad.

Toriyama himself said in V-jump in Broly movie interview, Saiyan's don't have family or the concept of it like Earthlings or Namekians, they only come to mate and when the child is born, the couple go their separate way and the child is raised by the nurses, there are some exceptions like Paragus and Bardock's family, only ones who have concept of family is the royal family who were Chieftain's in their tribal days
Goku sees his family more as friends

True, if he could he would have gladly trained Goten as well.

In my opinion, Goku gets right the most important-part of parenting: he loves his kids. You see that especially with Gohan. I mean...this guy dies twice to save his kid, saw the potential in his son that no one else did and has even broken the rules of the afterlife to come and help him. Uh... how is that a bad dad?

OrangeXLightning In reply to UlisaBarbic [2017-12-08 03:28:35 +0000 UTC]
They say he's a bad parent because of his absences from death...like seriously? He was DEAD! Not coming back the second time was a good move on his part anyway! He spent a year alone with Gohan, saw the importance of training Goten and Trunks, and trains so much to protect everyone. That IS his job! Goku is a good parent.

I agree with you! Likewise, I can say that the fact that Goku was with Gohan for those first four years...those are the formative years. THOSE are the yearsΒ where attachment forms. I also think the fact that Gohan still has a huge bond and respect for his father AFTER those 7 years is a huge indicator of their relationship. Plus...what is it that Piccolo always told Gohan? Oh yeah...that he could not train his son properly because he's too soft on him. Because he cares and coddles him too much. Last time I checked, you have to love someone to care and coddle them.
The fact that this comes up not only in Z but in Super as well saysΒ a lot

And the fact is, Gohan himself says he looks up to Piccolo, ALMOST as much as his dad, meaning, A, he holds his father in very high regard, and B, his father is the most important figure to him in his life.

Absolutely. And when Gohan grows up, whose outfit does he wear, especially if he's going into a battle? His father's.
Yeah, I don't see the 'Goku is a bad parent' argument holding any water

OrangeXLightning In reply to UlisaBarbic [2017-12-08 03:51:22 +0000 UTC]
Exactly. Everyone's always like, "Piccolo is Gohan's real father." No. Gohan specifically says he loves Goku more.

Yes! Gah, that bugs me so much! Yes, Gohan loves Piccolo, deeply. However, Goku is first in his heart and Piccolo is totally okay with that.

It's because of TFS. Some people just can't tell the difference between a parody and canon. I'm sorry but Piccolo did NOT raise Gohan. He kidnapped him at four and then left him to die...how is that raising him?

UlisaBarbic In reply to OrangeXLightning [2017-12-08 04:12:40 +0000 UTC]
Yeah...Piccolo is definitely one of Gohan's strongest mentors but there is a big difference between being a teacher and being a father. I also love that while there is very little that gets under Goku's skin, threatening his kids is one of the things that will do it. Someone, I cannot recall who, told me that if you notice Goku's Super Saiyan transformation, the first one--while Krillin's death started it, Goku didn't really start to actually transform until after Freeza said "Who's next, the brat?"

Yeah. And his speech before Cell killed him in Kai was so moving. "Keep hitting those books Gohan."

It was moving. I tend to watch the old dub, simply because that's what I grew up with but also, I like Gohan's reaction more...in the old dub, starting with the Androids arriving, he had switched to "Dad" for the most part but after Goku dies, he just screams out "DADDY!" and that always punches me in the feels.

That does get me in the feels. I prefer Gohan's Original actress, but overall, I prefer Kai. The actors understand the characters so much more in Kai, meaning the acting itself is generally better, and the accompanying OST's are generally more fitting in the emotional scenes. Bruce Faulconer's Super Saiyan 1 theme isn't fitting at all for the circumstances of the first time Goku Transformed. He typically nailed the intense moments and character themes, (gotta love Vegeta's SSJ theme, SSJ3, and the Buu themes) But for the emotionally driven scenes like Goku's death, KAI's ost is way more fitting.
I personally think the perfect dub would comprise of a mashup of the two OST's, Gohan's original voice, and maybe Bulma's, and leave the rest to what's in kai.
You know the old dubs most feelsy episode? The one with Mr. Robot. That episode got me so hard in the feels...

I definitely think the dialogue (with a few exceptions) is better in Kai but much like you, I prefer Gohan's original actress. Kai isn't bad though. I do enjoy it, just some less than others. And I still prefer Gohan's transformation to SSJ2 in Japanese. I haven't really found a background music in English that did it justice. Though, the French dub had an instrumental version of the original Japanese song, which I think worked really well.
And oh yes...the robot episode. That one always gets to me. Gohan really had a rough childhood...
And you know, I've found that even though the dialogue is drastically different from the Japanese, the dub of Movie 3 Tree of Might is pretty good, especially when Goku is trying to get through to Gohan. I know it's different from the original script but I can't help but love it. "Gohan...it's daddy!"

Well the movies haven't been redubbed to my knowledge, so not really anything to compare it to. Overall I like Kai better, but I still love the original Z. I feel like the highlight of the original dub are the movies and specials. Like History of Trunks and Fusion Reborn.
Something that I loved in Z was when Frieza/Freeza points out that he recognises Goku as Bardock's child he flat out said he doesn't care. A lot of people have the wrong idea of Bardock, and that line sort of solidified Goku's feelings.

They redubbed the first 3, so they are a little different from the original script but the overall feeling is still there so I consider them just as good. It's kind of nice to hear them redubbed because you can tell they were done after the actors had kind of gotten the hang of the characters. At least to me.
Very true. I actually love the fact that Goku has a very different view of his kids than Bardock had...for obvious reasons

The only reason they'd say he's a good "father was because he sacrificed himself for Gohan against Nappa.
