Description Part one of a storyboard project I’ve been working on!
Part II --> [link]

This story takes place fairly late on in my Jekyll and Hyde story (presently titled “The Pseudoscientists”), after Dr. Jekyll is forced to flee London. Here he is given the opportunity to follow his friend and mentor Dr. Frankenstein on his journeys across Europe, a lifelong fantasy of Jekyll’s that turns out to be not so fantastic.

Hyde is in this story too but he doesn’t show up in the first bit D:

This premise of this story takes a lot of its inspiration from my attempts to follow my Austrian friend Pia around her homeland.

I DON’T UNDERSTAND LOADING BARS. ANYONE?

Haha, yeah, the corny pop culture joke was a bit of a stretch, but that really was the attitude I got from the Swiss people I met XD

They LOVE their mountains. Your mountains aren't as good as theirs.

He isn't actually enormously out of shape, but the kind of trecking that Frankenstein does would put anyone out of sorts. D:

Wow I really love this. The pacing is wonderful; it feels like a movie already! And I love how drastically Jekyll's face changes whenever the other characters can't see him. I can definitely see the Hyde in him during those parts XD Great job!

I'm glad you picked up on that! Jekyll is ordinarily a very reserved and graceful character, so I was looking for ways for him to still be distinctly Jekyll even when he was, well, totally losing it. XD He's nearly lost his patience here, but as long as someone else is watching, he does his best to maintain an appearance of sanity. >>

That was amazing. Seriously. That fondue came out of nowhere. xD I remember Victor being really prone to getting ill and spending years of his life bedridden (and this is when he was a young man!), but I guess a lot can change in a lifetime if you set your mind to it. A lot of his illnesses were due to weak mental health, after all.

I'm now highly anticipating that second part. This was an awesome storyboard. So Victor doesn't know about Hyde yet, hmm? I'm sure it'll be exciting/tense when he does. o:

otherwise In reply to CigfrainSol [2011-08-23 01:25:16 +0000 UTC]

Oh goodness, is that really a canon character trait?? Of course I remember him seeing the creature for the first time and becoming bedridden for three months, but I thought that was more due to general derpiness of his character than an actual weakness in health.... Is that true?

I base Victor's character a lot off his background in contrast with Jekyll's--Jekyll is from the city, and a lot of his story deals with society and reputation, whereas Victor is from the country and goes chasing after the creature in the Alps. I had him pegged for being more at home in nature. I also take a bit of liberty in his personality, guessing how he might have changed as a person had he survived his trip through the arctic (which he does, in my version--this is fifteen or so years later). He has, to a certain extent, come to terms with his life and his personal failures, and has built up a certain hardiness and humor when dealing with difficult situations.

It..... doesn't last, though XD Jekyll and Frankenstein have a way of getting at each other's goats and bringing out the worst in each other.

CigfrainSol In reply to otherwise [2011-08-23 01:43:22 +0000 UTC]

I'm pretty sure it is. I read Frankenstein again recently (I dislike it more every time I read it.) and it really struck me just how often he will become ill and unable to do much of anything, and it will happen for months at a time! He does go hiking in the mountains, but I'm pretty sure that it's a personality trait of his to worry himself (quite literally) sick. But maybe after confronting his creation and taking responsibility for his actions, he found some sort of wellspring of inner strength that helped him get over it? I used to like Victor, but now that I've really examined the book more I've noticed that he is a rather weak-willed, misguided individual, which I suppose I blame more on Mary Shelley than he himself. I find it very unlikely that a man with the curiosity and will to create life from cold corpses (why didn't he just use ONE intact dead body? why sew a bunch together? just because they're large doesn't mean the veins will be! you can't connect veins like that!) would suddenly, at the very last moment, become abhorred by his actions and abandon them entirely, becoming sick for months. The pseudo-science is very weak and I don't agree with the message behind it that Shelley was trying to get across (I do appreciate the idea but I think it could have been done a lot better.)

Sorry for that rant there. :I

No I definitely agree that Victor is much more at home in nature. The mountains calm him down and allow him to focus and see things with a clear head. They got him through difficult times. (15 years later? Wouldn't that make him only around 40? He looks much older here. More in his 50s i would say.) He would have had to go through some toughening up in order to face his demons, and take the creature under his wing instead of vowing to destroy it.

Speaking of which, how does Jekyll survive his own "demise" in your version of events? Did he manage to create a formula that could better control Hyde?

I can imagine that they do.

.....I think Frankenstein is a thinly veiled metaphor for childbirth.

I feel like I just had this conversation with someone a few days ago! They really hated Victor too XD I find him more funny than obnoxious myself, but I definitely can understand why he's frustrating. I think a lot of it IS due to the very romantic writing style. It's all metaphors and people fainting all over the place and being so overcome by emotion that they worry themselves into illness.

Wow, now that I think about it, my Frankenstein is almost the opposite of the canon Frankenstein. 8| In my defense, I DID do a storyboard sequence a few years back of Frankenstein and Jekyll's very first meeting, fifteen years previous. There Frankenstein is very much the melodramatic hero from the novel.

Jekyll survives his own suicide attempt because Hyde's body is extremely extremely stubborn and, while the poison manages to knock him into a coma, doesn't quite kill him. He's buried, but Frankenstein, who is an expert in recognizing things that aren't quite quite dead, helps him to escape.

Hyde is actually quite active and well in this story! He is at this moment choosing to let his weaker half control the body because, frankly, not even one tiny molecule of Jekyll (or Hyde)'s being enjoys tramping around in nature eating berries and scrambling down cliffs. The fact is that out in the wilderness there's very little wickedness to be done! ("I am going to eat all the leaves off this tree. Then all the other giraffes will DIE....") He is in the position of Stitch when he lands in Hawaii.

But don't worry, he'll show up soon, thanks in large part to Frankenstein being a douche.

I was always under the impression that it was a metaphor for man setting foot into God's territory. :I Mostly I'm just annoyed by the fact that she (Shelly) makes humankind out to be these fragile, perfect, innocent creatures and that the creature is, by default, evil and demonic because he isn't "human." But you're right, it is pretty much the epitome of the "romantic" novel, and I guess that's just too romantic and not neo-classical enough for me. xD I like books that strike a balance between the two. Logic and emotion.

I mean, I don't hate Victor, but he annoys the crap out of me on many occasions.

Huh, so your theory is that Jekyll poisoned himself? It's never made clear in the book... I figured he just went into withdrawal on the formula and he had a heart attack or something.

So, Frankenstein helped Jekyll/Hyde escape, but didn't know about Hyde?

No giraffe is safe.

Woo.

otherwise In reply to CigfrainSol [2011-08-24 05:01:08 +0000 UTC]

I DO think we're supposed to sympathize with the creature, possibly more so than with Victor. I think that's certainly how it reads to modern viewers in any case.....

I'm pretty sure it's specified somewhere in the text that it's cyanide....? I may have to check again, but I'm nearly certain. For whatever reason a lot of people assume that Hyde killed himself, which to me is absurd. Jekyll taking the poison is the only sensible option in my book. Also my version of Jekyll has an affinity for poisons XD; Morbid curiosity of his (I tend to extend his repertoire to any fanciful-sounding potion or draught)

In this story, Frankenstein certainly knows about Hyde! Actually they have this really weird relationship where Hyde and Frankenstein actually get along much better as Jekyll and Frankenstein. Most of the time. If he were to really examine his feelings, Frankenstein would find himself deeply disturbed by Hyde's actions, but Frankenstein has in the last 15 years made a habit of NEVER examining his own feelings....

I do sympathize with the monster, but also with Victor. The monster killing his brother was essentially unforgivable. I wouldn't forgive that. But I would have reconciled to prevent further tragedies. That's where Victor's fatal error lies.

Hyde would never kill himself. His love of life is one of his key characteristics. Survival at all costs. It makes sense that Jekyll would try to kill himself, though, once he knew that it wasn't long before he became Hyde permanently.

Oh, well that makes a bit more sense. Because of the part with Frankenstein teasing Jekyll about the potions I assumed he didn't know their purpose.

Frankenstein's teasing tends to cover subjects that he is far too uncomfortable about to discuss plainly.
