Description This is a portrait of someone I used to love very much, still very much a friend. She was pretty much the first Japanese person I had ever known. Her ancient culture and its orientation towards art and decoration opened my eyes to new realms of expression and artistic freedom.

Well aren't we all... Anyway it's beautiful. It would also be nice in a rich bronze. Just my preference.

I admire you. Because, after all this time.. you still seem to love her, and even though many might think it's wrong, you still went ahead and manifested it this way... contrary to me... that I cannot hold a pen for long without feeling incredible pain... that I cannot conduct my keyboard to the rhythm of my hands...

Anyways, excellent work!!

Thank you Kronos,you honor me,
You must walk before you can run,
and run before you can soar...
I also play keyboard and guitar.
These are excellent ways to express what's inside ,but you have to have some proficiency with the instrument FIRST before clear expression can manifest...I have spent my whole life doing this metalwork, and have also developed some compassion for myself in the process and what I've been through. I used to be quite hard on myself as I intuit you are. Sooner or later (hopefully) you get to a place where you realize ,you're an alright kinda guy, maybe a bit awkward here and there, but overall a positive soul. When that day comes things start to relax a little ,and it gets easier to use you life experiences as resource material for your art...
For me all of my art is like MENTAL FLOSS.

Blast! I don't know what to say... nay. I have no idea how to express myself. Because if you knew what I wrote... perhaps by simple aesthetic, you may find my letters quite beautiful. But, alone they mean nothing.. because whatever I intended to make them worth, is never what the recipient wanted.
I do hope, as you say, to be capable of accepting my limits. Not only in the artistic sense, but also... what I may consider my life.
Anyways, I thank your kind words.

Just watched the Lord of the Rings trilogy again. Man,weren't there some fantastic costumes in that movie ?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

d-mikelson In reply to ou8nrtist2 [2007-10-02 15:14:09 +0000 UTC]

to be honest?
NO

of course they are visually impressive and oh so beautiful, but theyΒ΄re rather decoration instead of having their own life; they do not add content, itΒ΄s just an illustrative reproduction.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ou8nrtist2 In reply to d-mikelson [2007-10-02 23:41:15 +0000 UTC]

I hear you,
but a movie is a movie after all.
There was some pretty amazing armor and much of it from what I've read was not just illustrative reproduction.
Viggo Mortensen carried that sword with him everywhere he went for a full year before shooting ,so that it became part of him. And it was a usable blade. The cost of making these items as reproductions compared to the "real" thing was so close,Peter Jackson just said, fuck it ,and had the real deal made. They were several years making all those items before shooting...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

d-mikelson In reply to ou8nrtist2 [2007-10-04 19:48:36 +0000 UTC]

well, I donΒ΄t deny their importance for the movie nor the effort put in them.
Just that the costumes themselves do not have their "own" life, they could not stand outside the context of the movie.

I've been thinking all weekend on what you said and need to ask you, since I know you've gone into this WAY farther than I ,and probably can teach me something here...
Why is it important that the costume have a life of it's own outside the context of the movie ?I mean, is this what you are defining as an art work ?And just as an addendum question, did you see "The Return of the King"?because there are a couple of items in that that I believe COULD stand on their own outside the context of the movie...Just seeking clarification here and totally defer to your experience/knowledge on this...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

d-mikelson In reply to ou8nrtist2 [2007-10-10 22:18:12 +0000 UTC]

well, itΒ΄s like if I asked you if you find the sculptures in a baroque stage design great.
youΒ΄d propably say: yes, theyΒ΄re nice, but theyΒ΄re just decoration for the whole thing.
not nearly the level of your own work.

itΒ΄s like that.

itΒ΄s not important for a costume to have a life on itΒ΄s own, if it is just meant to serve itΒ΄s purpose. But if you ask me if I find it great, then I will mess it on the demand I have on my own things.

the costumes in the movie, just like the movie itself do not go beyond the illustrative visualsation of the book.
It doesnΒ΄t re-invent the story.
If I had make the design, I wouldΒ΄ve tried to convince Peter Jackson to put Gandalf in a scottish kilt or let Frodo being played by a 8- year old kid or make the dark lord a woman ... ... ... ... or something like this.
In the end, costuming is character-design.
What does the clothing in the moive has a role except being a represant for elven (or whatever) culture ? ItΒ΄s kind of impersonal.
If you want to talk about a particular costume, ask directly, please.
to give you a good hint, what costuming in movies I really appreciate, check out MIRRORMASK, an unknown british moive by Dave McKean and Neil Gaiman.
Not just that the costumes and masks have a great expression, and a lot to say, there is actually a part, where they talk about the philosophy of it, when the "normal" girl says to the masked guy:
"Does everybody here have a mask?"
" yes, of course. How could you know if youΒ΄re happy or sad without a mask?"
" I have a FACE"

later he says:
" all people look alike to me. Without a proper face you could be anybody"
