Description This is a portrait of someone I used to love very much, still very much a friend. She was pretty much the first Japanese person I had ever known. Her ancient culture and its orientation towards art and decoration opened my eyes to new realms of expression and artistic freedom.

Makes my feel like I'm viewing some ancient, great relic that a huge culture worships.

I love your representation. The emotion captured in something as unforgiving as steel is incredible.

Than you ww Rose,
I "speak" steel and stainless steel fluently.
It takes about 20 years to master this medium, but fortunately my father was a master sculptor and taught me to weld when I was 8 years old...I've been trying to breathe life into metal ever since...

Well you've done a very good job of it!
Have you ever tried making a sculpture of animals? Particularly wolves?

ou8nrtist2 In reply to wild-winter-rose [2007-10-02 03:05:39 +0000 UTC]

Not yet but I certainly wouldn't rule it out,
I'd start with MANY photographs, then begin sketching ,and reading everything I could learn about the critter, then get a skull if I could to further study their structure. What a magnificent beast huh ?

I am Cherokee as well,
Have you read "the Education of Little Tree" ?
It's a fantastic book !Reveals much to be proud of in our heritage...

Yes, I have. Twice actually
I'm also just about to take on the project of making a traditional Cherokee hunting bow. As in, find the tree, cut the wood, carve/shape the wood, make the bowstring, make the arrows, etc.
I'm big on traditional hunting techniques

It's wonderfully stylized and evocative. I love her expression. From what I've read, a strong and bewitching love. Something like this happened to me too, with a man from another culture... This is a striking work.

21 citrouilles,
Something of her ancient culture spoke to me most eloquently,
and I could see her line back many generations. Her ancestors awoke at the purity and strength of my love. They had not seen this for a very long time...

Bazua,
Everything ends someday ,especially mortal love, but the energy does not, only transformed. That experience is part of what has made me who I am today. And I'm OK with who I am,so I honor that young man and that young woman by creating a piece that places quotation marks around the experience. Sadness is an emotion in flux like all the others and really quite transitory...

I think the objects you chose to shoot on your travels were pretty damn interesting...
I'm waiting to hear if I've won a grant,(which I'll use to travel)but it doesn't really matter,I need another trip to Europe. I need to go to Bilbao to the Guggenheim,Barcelona for Gaudi, and Paris for the Rodin Museum and Victor Horta's Art Nouveau stuff, then Provence for some R&R...
