Description This is Impala, one of my fm het ghost ball pythons. She is darker then her sister, Carolina, and is the most fearful out of all of my ball pythons. She will ball and and hide her head at the drop of a hat. Yet she is also the only ball python that has aggressively struck out at me. Thankfully I am always weary and she didn't tag me but she is one confused snake. It's sad and I try to hold her as much as I can to try to get her out of this funk she is in to at least get her to trust me more. She has gotten a little better but still has a long way to go.

I picked the title I did b/c she really is a snake that you shouldn't disturb unless you know how to properly handle them.

Aw, I don't usually think of snakes as cute, but this picture does make me reconsider a bit. xD

Poor baby, I hope she feels better soon. Maybe such an awesome picture will somehow help. ;]

She has gotten better but I still don't trust her. Others I know would never bite me unless they mistook me for food...like if i handled a mouse and didn't wash my hands well enough. But she's very nervous and still needs a lot of work.

Yeah she's one of the few that isn't too fond of handling. But I don't blame her. She was pretty thin and I had to force feed her when I first got her. She is still leery of me b/c of that but I am sure she'll get over it eventually. Her sister is more outgoing and isn't afraid like this.

I dont like force feeding... its inhumane I think...but ya gotta do what ya gotta do. :/

I hope so!

It should only be done as a last resort and I do try everything else before I have to do it. It's not fun for me or the snake! But at least it did help her...she eats like a pig now!

Oh yeah..usually by the second or third force feed most snakes will eat on their own. I wouldn't want something shoved down my throat and I think they just eventually get the hint. Whether they like it out not they are gonna eat something!

Yeah /That/ to me is crule.
But ya know every few weeks/months that they wont eat then your kinda forced to!

PaganFireSnake In reply to NarAar [2010-04-24 04:10:10 +0000 UTC]

I'm ok with them going on the occasionally hunger strike. That is normal for some of them. But if it starts to effect their weight I'm gonna force feed them, The longer you wait if they start to loose weight, if they aren't force feed, they can get really weak and then that can really cause some big problems. Thankfully I have only had to do it a handful of times to save a snakes life.

Yeah,Ive seen snakes go 3 months without eating and be okay.
but yeah like you said, if they start to lose weigh....nu-huh,Im sorry I have to shove this in your mouth...but im trying to save your life!

Oh they just HATE it! But yeah I'm gonna do it to save them if it kills me! I know a few breeders that will not even bother. They would rather just let the snake die. To me that's wrong. Yeah bp's can go quite a while without a meal but to not do anything at all when it's obvious they need some help isn't right.

I,ve seen some, they are pulling away like NOOOOOOO!
Thats like your dog not eating for days and not taking it to the vet! T_T

PaganFireSnake In reply to NarAar [2010-04-24 15:43:44 +0000 UTC]

I worked for a vet until I got sick a few months ago. It was really sad when some of these animals came in that had been sick for a long time but the owner didn't do anything about it. I know times are hard right now but if you can't take care of an animal you should have it in the first place. There was one lady that always complained that her cats kept getting pregnant but yet she didn't want to have them fixed. Plan stupidity....

NarAar In reply to PaganFireSnake [2010-04-24 16:26:12 +0000 UTC]

Uh-ho I hope your okay!

HAVE THEM FIXED LADY!
Shes complaining about how there and how they wont stop
and with the
if she dosent want kittens then..

Well thats pretty frustrating! -.-

Yeah it's a stupid inner ear issue..tho the Dr thought I had MS at one point! I so much blood taken and all of these MRI's. I have fluid, calcification and swelling in the inner ear. It is amazing how something so small can cause such a big issue.

Yeah I really wanted to slap her! What also kills me is people that don't fix their animals just b/c they want their kids to experience a animal having babies. They really need to get their priority strait! The barely think of the possible issues the mother or babies can have. then they complain that they can't find homes for the babies once they have out worn their "cuteness" and reality has set in.

Oh now don't tempt me! It was really hard b/c on the fire dept I can pretty much say what I wanted if someone was acting like a idiot on a call. I had to actually b/c mine and other lives depended on it. It was so hard holding back what I really wanted to say to some of these people. Towards the last few weeks I developed a tick below my right eye...I blame it on them! It's gone one of course so I really think it was that place that did it too me.

N-Naja [2010-04-03 14:00:37 +0000 UTC]

at the picture she seems friendly enough...
When my corn gets in a mood I leave her alone for a week or two, but surely that doesn't help with this one?

You really make good pics, not your average "HEy that's my ball look at him/her she's soooo pretty" picture I like that. (I also try, but it's difficult)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PaganFireSnake In reply to N-Naja [2010-04-20 14:56:59 +0000 UTC]

Yeah she's ok...but as a ball python goes she's not the friendliest. A lot of it tho is out of fear. When I first got her she refused to eat and was very thin so I had no choice but to force feed her. I think she remembers that and is fearful b/c of it and I don't blame her for that. I try to hold her as much as I can to try to get her over her fear and she is getting better. But I'm not letting her anywhere near my face anytime soon!

I am glad you like my shots. You are right that they aren't the "typical" shots you see of herptiles. I try to get shots of them that most others wouldn't think of b/c I want to try to portray them in a more friendlier light. It takes a lot of patience to work with any animal ....sometimes hours or days to get the shots you want. Any of my shots I have I got on the animals terms. If they don't want to be out and/or to have shots taken of them I'm not going to force it. I am sure if you are patient with your corn she'll give you a few opportunities to get some nice shots. Just don't give up. Sometimes if you hold them for a while and give them time to calm down a bit that helps.

Aw, poor little thing, kind of sounds like my new spider morph. He's really jumpy and it takes him a good 10-20 minutes before he decide to unball himself and start to explore. And then the slightest thing will send him shooting back into his little snail shell pose.

PaganFireSnake In reply to cosmicspider [2010-03-31 17:07:06 +0000 UTC]

Poor little scared snake. I can't help but laugh b/c sometimes they ball up like that for the silliest things. But you feel bad for them too. I am sure with time he will get over his paranoia and calm down at least a bit for you.

I was thinking the same thing too when she stuck her nose out like that. But she is also a very confused and nervous snake. Hopefully tho, with more time and work, she will get over that.
