Description Warning: Very large file. You can hit download for full size, however. Also, I regret to inform you that this is 1 of 2. D:

There are a lot of my pallanoph species running amok in these, so I also apologize for that. But, to make identification easier, I've numbered the sketchy bits so I can explain some of the weird that is occurring. So here goes:

1. Tirlag, the Teirnlord, having one of his less balanced moments, 2. A little sketch in which we have Sorstan the assassin disabling his brother in arms, Reivig. To those up in knowledge on my novel, this is where that betrayal starts. (It looks like leapfrog, doesn't it?) Just a concept I could play around with to make it seem more believable. 3. Unnamed sparkly looking Germanic pallanoph. 4. Neng, who probably has a bigger fanbase than all my other characters combined, looking a bit dubious 5. Andirg pallanoph head studies! 6. Sacrilege! Pallanoph Sorstan -> Human Sorstan -> No comment. 7. The magpie like species of corvids that exist in my novel world alongside the pallanophs! I really need to get their design fleshed out and finished. 8. Mirthond, King Orstad's mate 9. Sorstan and his slightly unusual anatomy, posing again. 10. The Teirn ambassador Fleir (who has one ear, and is probably the most outright nasty piece of work in my writing!) beside Tirlag again, who looks a little melodramatic. 11. GRIFFIN, ! 12. Part of the dramatic concluding scenes in the novel, where Tirlag and Tjardek have met their ends and Adelaide is deeply upset. (SPOILER if you haven't been watching me for long, ooooh ouch!) 13. Is missing, but because I apparently can't count, not because of superstition.... 14. Sorstan JAZZ HANDS. He's actually demonstrating pallanoph handspan, as it were. 15. Reivig human! By far the hardest pallanoph I've ever humanized. 16. Large kitty cat from observation, tiger from memory! 17. Sorstan's mom! (Your first real look at a Teirn female.) 18. Quick sketch of Sorstan running like hell... this is close to how most of my real sketches look like. 19. Tjardek being a creep. As per usual.

And... I'm terrible. So get to a place high and dry real quick-like before the next wave hits, I'm going to feed my starving self.

All of this unnecessary mess is © to myself, April Schumacher. So I'd better not see a single shard of this being used in ways it shouldn't be.

so do the pallanophs turn into humans in your story?

Nope, I just figured I'd like to do some human practice without resorting to drawing myself or a stock photo. Besides, making a human out of an animal is a fun challenge!

Tiger... from memory... How many times I have to say you're too good for your own good!?

Everything is just... SO AWESOME. Though some things are scary, like the sparkling noph. #19 for some reason looks like a bat in my eyes :0 Maybe I've just looked through too many bat pics lately... Neng is lovely as always <3 I think he has the same kind of charm the phantom of the opera has. THINK ABOUT THAT, MAN And why we haven't seen more girl nophs! I SMELL DISCRIMINATION. No wait that's just me...
In #12 I started to wonder how long they've been dead and should the bodies look a bit more stiffer; also the eyes. They don't look quite... dead enough?

Anyhow, please continue being awesome <3

When I was young, I drew plenty of tigers. Which is why I am amazed they stuck as well as they did! o.o

And no sketchdump is complete without at least a small dose of terrifying! Sparklepants (and Sorstan's soul searching eyes) should be enough to fulfill the recommended daily amount. I think you're right about Neng. YEP.

No, I do need more females running amok in the story. But... where to fit them? Maybe most of the 'noph girls are too smart to get into trouble, lol.

And as for #12, the incident has just occurred, so they're pretty freshly dead. (Wait, that's a lot of blood, perhaps????) Poor Adelaide (and Nharath) had to witness the horror firsthand.

(Oh! And regarding your commission... I've made considerable progress as of this past week, I'd put it close to 65% finished. If you'd like, I can probably post up a progress pic. Or, you could wait and have it be a surprise. I want to have it finished by the end of October. I MUST!!!!)

kalmanen In reply to pallanoph [2011-09-30 21:40:58 +0000 UTC]

Soulsearching... suuure. And you should use the females in scenery! and like... I had some thoughts in the day. Basically when you're showing us the places, the races etc relative-to-the-story-but-not-necessarily-in-it, use females! Also sketches ;D

And yes, NOT ENOUGH BLOOOOOD. Blood and goooreeee!

(That's so awesome! My b-day is on Oct. 26th, it'd be SO great to see it done then And I'll just wait untill you're finished, though I'm soo tempted... Also in a bit more sadder news, Luca had to be put down last week so next time I'll be commissioning you for potrait of two lost loves )

Poor dear Tjardek, he'd come so far as a character. D: But he gets a good long run, so at least he gets more screen time than Sorstan, who is the real loss here. Sometimes I worry I get too attached to my characters!

Thank you for enjoying the sketchpile!

Awesome. No.8 looks almost like a llama to me for some reason. O.o
these would be so much better than DA's llamas. XD
Anyways.
No.6 is funnier than shit.
And No.14 is very interesting as far as Pallanoph anatomy.
I love how these beasts are so similar to humans and yet not really like any existing species.
They are extremely unique. And yet believable.

Im officially in love with them. XD

Love the griffins beak btw. Nice way of adding 'teeth' without making it look unnatural.
I love it when artists can make fantasy that is both extremely imaginative, realistic and believable.

pallanoph In reply to mysteriouswhitewolf [2011-09-29 08:36:40 +0000 UTC]

I'm not quite sure how llama gets in there, and I never notice until someone points it out. It's puzzling.

I'm glad they seem unique and also believable, as it's something I've struggled with for entirely too many years... good to know I'm finally getting close. So thank you!

I think I've seen other griffin designs sporting serrated beaks, and I myself have been drawing them that way for a long time, makes them seem all the more frightening!

mysteriouswhitewolf In reply to pallanoph [2011-09-29 08:55:05 +0000 UTC]

Lol, I think its just the human mind trying to make sense of something strange. ^^
Like how many ppl find similarities with hyena's and canines because they try
to make sense of the strange anatomy by comparing it to something they are
familiar with.
You are most welcome.

Oh, I love these sketches! I didn't realize the assassin brothers' deaths were at the end of the novel. Hmm... That #3 Unnamed Pallanoph... it must be Major Armstrong from FMA in 'noph form! ( [link] ) Love the "jazz hands" display. ^_^ I always have a hard time imagining a creature that's usually on four legs (my OC, Vapor to be exact) standing on its hind legs. This will probably help me a lot.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to MistingWolf [2011-09-29 08:28:13 +0000 UTC]

The timeline concerning the assassin brothers is still in progress, because I've been trying to figure out just where the story begins. (Since there are at least a few dominant plot threads aside from Nharath and Adelaide's adventures!)

And lol.. yes, I suppose he could very well be a small curly variant of that character.

Quadruped characters are tricky to draw on their hind legs, since you don't often see carnivores in particular holding such a stance for any length of time. I used a lot of imagination here.

Loryska [2011-09-28 01:25:02 +0000 UTC]

If you would, could you kindly look at the creature I made, and perhaps add a few pointers? I know, I feel like a n00b doing this, but I just want to see what you have to say about them. They are related to felines, thus they are mammalian. They can also be many a color and pattern, but only the natural colors of cats of course. XD I've made a neon conchin....looks like a fruit cup that has been put into a mold. Well anywho, here are the links.

Curious, what kind of scanner do you have? It works beautifully!

As for your critters, I'd be delighted to take a look... not sure when I'll have proper feedback typed up for you, but I'll do my best. (Really scatterbrained!)

As for scanners, mine's a fairly standard but decent model, the Epson Perfection V500 Photo. Not terribly expensive, and worth the money. It helps that I do a lot of touch ups/levels adjusting in photoshop, though.

And, unfortunately, I'm not sure if I have a proper finances for such a scanner, but thank you for letting me know. Perhaps it could be a Christmas present, who knows.

Wow, these sketches are wonderful! I envy your skill of producing so many quality sketches!
Out of all of these I absolutely adore no. 12, it's such an emotional piece and I think you pulled it off exceptionally well just in sketch alone
1 , 5, 9, and 19 are also among my favourites here

And one of two sketch dumps is good news! I'm eagerly looking forward to the next bunch!

Thanks, dear...
