Description
Picture Taken 14/07/2010I just found it cute that they linked tails. The rats use their tails much like a second limb to steady themselves by either balancing the body or wrapping around another object. The tail is usually the last body part to let go when the rat moves from one branch to another.

I'm not sure I've trained my dears well enough for that sort of thing. It's really impressive that you and your little darlings know each other well enough and have the trust built up to do this sort of thing. I'd love to see a video of them climbing up into the tree.

Well, I always supposed that it was like this for everyone. I never let my rats fall, and they know I'm always there when they need to be caught. I'm afraid I still can't upload videos (manual was very vague XD)

I'm a timid rat mommie, I worry more then I should. And my pair of boys are only the second generation of rats for me so I still feel like I'm learning a lot about being a good rat owner.

Yeah these are my 5th or 6th lot, so I've learnt to handle them more firmly (I don't think that was the right words) but I know I can probably learn more

This picture shows how much rats need their tails. Not just because of the reason to stabilize, they need them also for body temperature control.
This is the reason why it shouldn't be allowed to breed manx rats.

I firmly believe ever rat should have a tail. I had a rat Con Brio (this is in the time when I actually remembered their real names and not nicknames XD) and we had an accident. I still think it was the dog, but any, he his tail was damaged badly (it was just hanging on when we took him to the vets). The vet amputated his tail but it took him a long time to regain his balance. Eventually he died of, what I believe, was heat stroke (on a summer's day) because he couldn't regulate his temperature like everyone else. It proves that rats need tails!
