Description People have been asking here and on other sites on how I went about doing this robot. Thought it would be easier to show.

Now this is more like a little sneak peak at my work flow, then a full step by step tutorial(That would be impossible to get down into one picture). This is more for people who already have some basic knowledge in Zbrush and standard 3D graphic software.

If you have more specific questions please feel free to ask and I'll try to help.

this has helped a lot! I am not yet really familiar with zbrush, but this concepts really prove that this tool is epic! Thanks for sharing!
The baked alpha was a really nice tip.
By the way, so you rendered the baked map as image right? and used its alpha/transparency data as a brush?
so I can also make my own from photoshop? ( like make shapes and having their edges blurred , which will have an indented effect?

Do you have a tutorial sharing how to bake the heightmap in Modo?

Astral-Muffin [2013-07-14 18:40:10 +0000 UTC]

Quick question. Why would you use alpha maps instead of for example projection master with the tools you had previously made? Does it look different or is it just preference?

You are something beyond comprehension, man. Not only does it take great skill to create models like yours in the program, it takes a brilliant mind to create models like yours inside it to begin with.

This was really insightful, I have had a few daliances into Zbrush before but never anything too detailed, thanks for the tips

I just have 1 question, you use Modo to make your alpha maps right? Could I not just paint those in photoshop or another painting program?

seiferzed [2012-04-27 09:40:19 +0000 UTC]

nice ! i never thought it could look real textured just by playing with some photoshop effects , which makes me wonder if you can take the resulting texture from photoshop and paint it back in zbrush so it can have this dirty metal look in real 3D in Zbrush

Thanks for sharing! I work mostly with Mudbox because I never got the hang of Zbrush's interface, but the principles behind stamps and alpha maps are the same.
It was a big help to see the technique explained in detail like this!

panick In reply to PlasticFrogCG [2012-04-26 22:59:25 +0000 UTC]

Yup exactly. The method is more or less the same. I'm sadly "stuck" in Zbrush since I started with that, at least for sculpting. I'm gonna use Mudbox more for texturing.

Glad you like it
