Description
A frequent visitor and often the only feeding hummingbird around. He spent more time chasing the other hummers away... and even if other types of birds got to close to HIS supplies of nectar he would pursue them through the trees... terrorizing them all... from chickadees to woodpeckers... a VERY tough bird!Related content

Great picture! Β I love ruby throated hummers. Β Then again, they're the only ones we get in New England! Β I love your gallery, you seem like quite the adept bird watcher! Β I the representative of my biodiversity club myself but i'm not nearly as skilled with photography as you. Β However, I am trying! Β Do you mind if I use some of your pictures as reference for my field journal? Β I would really appreciate it!

Wonderful capture of this awesome little guy! Hummers are such tough little birds! Very territorial! I've had the experience of being buzzed by a hummer when I got too close to a nest. Congrats on the DD!

Thank you! Actually he is a pretty typical hummingbird... he wants it all and he takes it now!
True for both survival and contribution to the gene pool.

My pleasure!
Yes, natural selection is the best. That wouldn't stop me though from wanting to hug and pet it, it's amazing how such a tiny creature is so competitive

Thank you and you are not mistaken [although some of the western hummers are similar]!

this is so wonderful. I have tried and tried to take pictures of birds in flight with my nikon but they just come out so blurry.
what kinds of settings do you use to take clear flight pictures?

Thank you!!! We use multiple high-speed strobes [set to 1/32 or 1/64th power] with remote flash triggers so that the light duration is VERY short. With an extra remote trigger on the camera and another in my hand, I can be inside the house or
anywhere in the yard watching and shooting at will. The strobes are Yongnuo Speedlight YN560 for our cameras [about $65
or so shipped from overseas. The flash triggers are from the same company Yongnuo RF-603N for Nikon [set of two for around
$30 shipped from overseas] they arrive in a week or so and are very simple to use. The strobes take AA batteries and the triggers
take AAA. The triggers are remote control transceivers... so all of them can be used interchangeably... as the one that controls
everything in your hand or on the camera or on one of the strobes.
